For my son for xmas. Problem is he's running a 5770 and currently playing at 1280*1024. Thinking of getting a 24" Acer HD 1920*1080 resolution. Budget wise, I don't think we'd be able to swing both a monitor AND a good gpu, so I'm thinking of a GPU in the sub $200 range that'll be able to game at this res. Anything decent you guys would recommend

I can't remember his exact specs right now but I think he's got the following:

AMD 1045T
Asrock 890FX I think
xfx 5770
Antec Truepower 650w
4gb gskill ripjaw RAM

He plays mostly bf3 and TF2. Some Command & Conquer. He doesn't really care too much about eye candy so it's mainly bang for buck at this point. Just looking for suggestions in case we do go this route for xmas.

C&C and TF2 should both easily max out with the 5770 at 1920x1080, BF3 not so much though it's probably still quite playable. xcal237's recommendations are good though I'd suggest waiting for Black Friday.

I figd it'd be OK except maybe with bf3. I was also considering firing them. The 5770 was part of my old xfire setup before I upgraded. just not sure if it'd worth the possible headaches & $ for marginal performance.

I would highly recommend the 7850,i have mine at 1050/1450 and i happen to game at 1280x1024 currently myself and BF3 since the new 12.11 drivers i sit well over 50fps fully maxed out as a minimum and average much higher then 60.

People might say its overkill,i disagree and when you get a 1080p monitor it would be perfectly fine if you can live without msaa,me myself i love it and have a hard time disabling it.

Having a hard time even considering ditching this monitor for a 1080p monitor as i know i will be wanting a 7970 to get the same damn fluid gameplay i currently am with this 7850 and lcd 17''.

You could pick up a 5870, may not seem like a huge upgrade but they are selling for $100 locally on craigslist, would be a big perf. boost.

I think we'll just get the monitor for now and see how it handles the higher resolution. If it can game ok with lower settings, it may be enough for him. Then I'll see what options we have if the games are unplayable.

I think the new monitor will make a big difference. I'd rather play at on a 23/24" 1080p monitor on low settings than on a small 1280x1024 monitor on high settings. I would probably go for Asus VH series, they're decent no-frills TN panels.
