i'm not so sure that its an invalid UPC. when the clerk last night thought a cdrw and dvdrw were the same thing she read me the UPC from a phillips cdrw. exactly the same as the dvd except for the last 4 digits (3784991837 vs. 3784991141)

<< Tell ya'll what. I am a manager for Wal-Mart. When I go to work, I will decrypt that transaction code on the bottom of the receipt and see if this is bullsh!t or not. >>

Thanks MoMeanMugs this will help a lot. Please also get the UPC if possible:)

It is easy enough to check. Search one of the hundeds of available UPC databases online and see who is registered to the UPC. The UPC is does not even pass the check digit validation for a UPC. 03784 is registered to Philips Electronic, but 00378 is registered to DOW chemical. Even if you remove one of the zero from the prelude of the code it still faild and is no longer 12 digits. The UPC is obviously a fake by either the Walmart manager or the poster.

Here is one site that hosts the lastest UCC Database. There are many others.

This deal is real.

I scored one the day after Christmas in Des Moines, IA.

I have been scouring since then, but haven't found any more.

Skeegs is correct about the UPC belonging to Philips...the infamous Philips 8X CD burner is 037849894668; the first 6 digits are identical to this DVD writer.

That's what I'm curious about. How come this deal has supposedly been live for some time and just now getting posted here? We might have a ll had a better chance if someone had posted this earlier. We need to share deals like this ASAP!

The first six digits listed were 003784 NOT 037849. BIG DIFFERENCE. Even if you remove one of the zeros from the front of the UPC, it is still invalid and fails the check sum digit for a industry standard UPC code. Check the fact they speak for themselves. The UPC posted is a fake

Thats why I typically do not frequent this forum.

A lot of people in here are EXTREMELY quick to judge and flame.

Also, I wasn't making fun of people. Again it is a symptom of the above.

I called Walmart in Greensburg, IN. The product code on the receipt (003784991837) is valid and discontinued. According to the service desk, they checked stock nationwide and there are ZERO available anywhere. Dead and buried. Waste of time and effort.

it just seems way to fishy, why would they sell a 500 product for less than 100? its a new product so it shouldnt be discouinted, every walmart i called i also asked if they carried or ever carried them and all said no, try calling phillips and asking them

some of the Wal-mart's i visisted (see above) said they USED to have it, but had not had it in stock since Halloween...

I am figuring this was either A) Prank (but i dont believe that yet) or B) Once in a lifetime chance...let's just hope he gets hit by a truck tommorow to balance out the Karma.

Ok, here is how it went down for me.

Picking up a surge strip and cat5 cable (couldn't find it at WM).

Saw 2 DVD+RWs (NOTE: It is really a +) sitting on the shelf with no prices anywhere.

Picked one up and took it to the electronics checkout. They couldn't find it in the system, so they sent me to the layaway dept. (right next to electronics). The lady there couldn't find it either, so she asked "Julie" in the back. Supposedly "Julie" is the inventory goddess. She couldn't find it either so she went looking for the Electronics Dept manager.

She found the Electronics Dept. manager and he said the cost on them was 84.95. "Julie" was saying, "No, this is a DVD also." He then forcefully said "No, the cost is 84.95. (to me) Would you buy it for 89.95?"

Of course I will :)

They had to manually enter the cost and a 6 character code for the receipt. They entered "DVDDDD" as the item description.

I immediately dumped it in my car and went back in for the second one. I think "Julie" took care of that one, because I couldn't find it anywhere......

I'm not sure why they would have a product on their shelves and not in their system? Does that ever happen?

This implies that you bought two. Is that correct?

I wouldn't have went out and just grab the second one right away... It's really fun reading just how far each would go for a HOT deal.

I call, on hold forever, finally someone picks up.
Me: "Hi , do you have any dvd writers?"
Her: "TV what?"
Me: "DVD roms"
Her: "Um...yes, i am looking at one right now" (someone called before? heheh) "Its a pacific digital.uhh..no...philips"
Me: "And how much is it?"
Her: "Um 149.96"
Me: "can you put that on hold for me?"
Her: "No, we don't do that, you have to come and get it"

Sigh...driving my mom to work in an hour, gonna go there afterwords, its only an hour out of the way. Heh.
