I am ordering a larger PSU, but it will take a week to get here. In the meantime is there any way to get a second regular PC power supply to work just to power the video card? It seems to need a signal from the PC to switch on, which I can't do because my main PSU is installed of course.

A better (ie, safer & potentially less problematic) fall back would be to just temporarily substitute a lesser video card. Otherwise you're crusing for an expensive financial bruis'n through damaging/frying something (MB, VC or PS).

I haven't used one of these myself.

Visiontek also made a 5.25'' slot dedicated psu for video cards. I have one in my garage I got w\ a computer but have never used... probably get one for $30-40

I know that doesn't help if you have a psu in the mail.. but thought i'd post anyhow :)

The green wire on the mobo connector is the power supply switch. Shorting that to a black wire will turn the PWS on. I used to have 2 PWS's in a few cases, and I had an extra switch on the back to turn the 2nd power supply on via this method. It's actually the same method that is used in some servers. I saw one a few months ago that had 40 something hard drives and an extra PWS powering the drives that had to be turned on manually first via this method.
