I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to use the Sony external DVD/CDRW player as a external drive for a laptop. Unfortunately the laptop only has usb1.1... Have you tried it before?

Here's the link to the product I mentioned,

The laptop also has firewire, but I don't see any affordable external DVD/CDRW drives supporting firewire.Sony Portable DVD/CDRW player

usb1.1 is limited to 4x on CDR .. i imagine that's around 1x for DVD, prolly less.

Should work, but slow. You could buy a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card though if needed.

I think that 1x DVD is close to 1.5MB/sec, which is USB 1.1's theoretical maximum speed. And USB never hits is maximum speed. So yeah, do look into a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card.
