Possible to Turn Router Into Access Point without DD-WRT?

I'm trying to figure out an economical method for connecting an HTPC and my Xbox 360 to my wireless n router at the other end of the house. I can get a wireless card for the HTPC and Linksys has a new 802.11n access point that would work for the Xbox, but I'd rather not spend that much if I don't have to.

Is it possible to turn a cheap 802.11n router into an access point that could be shared by the PC and Xbox without DD-WRT? I ask because the cheap 802.11n routers don't seem to be compatible with DD-WRT.

Another possibility I thought of was to just use a wired switch behind the Linksys access point that both the PC and Xbox could use. Not sure if that would work though.

Every Wireless Router is also an Access Point.

However, what you are looking into is Not an Access Point but a Wireless Devices that can work as a Driverless Client Card or an end point Bridge.

Wireless Modes - http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Modes.html

Very few Wireless Routers can be configured as is to act as a Client and few more can do it with DD-WRT.

Draft-N might pose some compatibility difficulty in achieving this too

Thanks for the terminology lesson. I wasn't quite sure if access point was the right term or not.

Sounds like my best bet may be to just bite the bullet and get the Linksys WGA600N and wireless card separately to save myself some headaches.

The only cheap draft n routers I could find that would be less expensive than that combo were these:

ENCORE ENHWI-N
TRENDnet TEW-632BRP
TRENDnet TEW-631BRP
EDIMAX BR-6504N

I don't think any one of them is compatible with DD-WRT.

Let put it in perspective.

It seems that the only N related Wireless that is supported by DD-WRT if the old Linksys WRN300N version 1.

In addition I do not think any realest of Draft-N support Clean Mode as is (if you need a mini project log to whole the data sheets of the N product and check).

Therefore, I would probably click the delete button on DD-WRT and N, or any other concoction and get a regular Box Game card.

The SMCWEB-N is around the same price as the WGA600N. It isn't dual-band, but supports multiple clients via the built-in 10/100 switch.

You might also asking Linksys sales/support if the WGA600N supports multiple clients if you connect a switch behind it. 10/100 switches can be dirt cheap (think landfill).

I'll look into that product. It looks to be a better solution than the WGA600N since it has RJ-11 ports on the back. Is SMC a reputable company?
