I recently had to fdisk/format my hard drive (was on Win98) due to a virus, there were some files i forgot to backup.. is there anything i can do to bring back those files? A software program or a service center i can take my drive into? The files total size must have been around 40MB. My current OS is win98. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I heard of this, isn't the only way to get it back is pay $50 for a professional to bring it back from the HD or something?

something like PowerQuest Lost & Found could help, they have been oferring it for free lately at PowerQuest site

You can use a program like Lost and Found to recover lost data like that, just make sure you have a 2nd hard drive handy, it makes things a lot easier. Also it would cost a lot more than $50 for someone to do data recovery for you, probably upwards of $1000 depending on what you needed recovered. So the answer to your question is yes, there is a way to recover your lost data, it is just do you want to put the time into doing it.

$1000? Jeez, is it THAT hard to recover lost data?

Do they probe each platter inch by inch to find this data or what?

well that's what happens when all is lost, when a drive breaks down. think of what it takes to get data off a platter, you have to open the drive, disassemble it, take the platters off and however they do it find a way to read data off of it.
