Possible To Mount Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme on LGA1150 Using Evo 212 Brackets?

I just got an Evo 212 assuming it would be THE air cooler to get for my (coming) LGA1150 board (Asus Z87-Pro).

I have a Thermalright 120 Ultra Extreme on my old 775 Board and can easily see & feel that the Ultra 120 Extreme would likely be the better cooler.

The Evo has a universal backplate and retention bracket and (according to manual) is compatible to pretty much everything incl. 775, 1150 etc.

Is it possible to use the EVO 212 mounting accessories to attach the Thermalright 120 Ultra to the new board? It looks like it COULD work, sort-of, without needing this extra bolt-thru kit? (I mean the EVO kit has everything, backplate, bracket etc....)

Would it be worth it taking my old, trusty Ultra Extreme 120 over the EVO 212 anyway?

Edit: According to some comparisons, the Ultra Extreme 120 is up-to 6C cooler w/ overclocked CPUs, I consider this significant.

Is the EVO 212 bracket strong enough for the 120 Ultra? From what I remember, the 120 I had was a bit heavy. I don't know what the EVO weighs.

I've actually done this between coolers on LGA-775 systems -- using the bracket assembly of one type of heatpipe tower to mount another one.

If it looks in every way as though the assemblies fit, there shouldn't be a problem.

I know what you're doing with this. Too lazy to remove the old bracket from the board, or wanting to leave the board in its motherboard mountings to make the switch. It should either work, or it won't work. And -- it might work. It depends on the two respective coolers and their design.

You could try emailing Thermalright for a backplate -- if you have time and patience. Praise their product and be a slight fanboy and you might get them to send one free of charge.

Couple anecdotes:

LL gave me a door for the X1000 for free -- no charge even for shipping or even a request for an invoice. Phanteks has replaced the front IO assembly for their Evolv case free (invoice was required) and sent me the items needed to attach the fans to their TC14PE (no invoice). Noctua typically is good for shipping those backplates out for free too.

It's a little more complicated since the 775 holes/backplate for the Ultra are definitely not compatible with 1150...but it looks like that there shouldn't be a problem with the coolers itself. (And if there should be any, nothing what a washer or two pennies might not fix).

Short: If I hadn't bought the EVO, I wouldn't be able to mount the ULTRA to the new board. But now I got an EVO and it looks I can mount the Ultra with the EVO stuff to the new board...and I am certain I can actually mount the EVO (!) to the old board (using the old 775/Ultra brackets) which I will do since I will hand down the old PC to my wife.

The bracket *looks* a little weaker and the Ultra is definitely heavier, but I don't think it should be an issue.

This might be a little complicated, I am in Spain :) But I will give it a shot anyway. You are correct, I just read that Noctua provides such upgrade kits for FREE. I can hint at this..and maybe they send me a backplate :)

Edit: I emailed them. Yes, basically all I need is a backplate but I still think I can do it with the existing things from the EVO as well. Backplate and bolts from the old ULTRA however might result in a little sturdier mount.
