Possible to "ghost" Windows 2000 Server?

The client wants a simple (cheap) backup solution for the server. We are hoping to use a program like Ghost or Drive Image to dump the partition to an external (USB) hard drive. I looked on Symantec's site and the requirements don't mention Server being compatible. If Ghost9 doesn't run on Win2000 Server, is there a "drive image" program that will?

I Emailed Symantec a detailed question yesterday but haven't received any response. I called their customer support and sadly the person on the other end had a hard time understand my question and I had a hard time understanding her period.

I used Ghost on all our Dell servers. We have a bunch or 2650's and 1750's. I store the image on an internal drive so I don't know if a USB drive will work.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. One more question... Are you doing the Ghost process through DOS or are you using the GUI process. Also, any problem with the PERC (Dell RAID cards)? I talked to a friend this morning and he said Ghost9 wouldn't load on his 2000 Server.

Doe's Ghost clone servers?

7: Officially, no. It can clone most versions of Microsoft Windows from 95 through XP, as well as many forms of Linux. It is not certified for Server software, although it may work. RAID mirroring may need to be broken first, which defeats the purpose, although hardware RAID systems may fool Symantec Ghost into seeing one physical hard drive. Additionally, some server level software may have trouble because it is associated to the server's Security ID (SID), and when that SID is changed, the application may no longer work.

This site is your best bet. Later

Also, only ghost a member server, not a DC. AD would likely freak out if it saw duplicates of the FSMO roles.

Well, any SID or AD issues wouldn't be a concern as this will not be used to roll out multiple boxes. This box is standalone and the client only wants a cheap backup solution for their main server so in a perfect situation it would never be used. Thanks again for the help guys!
