Possible to get files off of dead Mac HD using PC...?

Buddy has a dead Macbook laptop. Is this like a regular PC laptop that I could remove the hard drive and plug it into my desktop, and recover their files off of it (assuming it's not dead b/c the HD itself crashed)?

I don't know anything about Mac laptops or the Mac OS. Does it use the same file structures etc. that a PC does that it would be "plug'n play" compatible in that sense?

Thanks for any advice!

Modern Macs use the same type of hardware as modern PCs, but the software is different. In the case of hard drives, Windows will see the drive, but it won't have the software to handle the file system, and the drive will show up as corrupted.

Your best bet would be to recover the files on another Mac.
