This is wildly inaccurate. Period. If you don't want to use Vista, then fine, don't use it, I really don't care at all what you do. But it really bothers me when people come around and just bad mouth it constantly when it's mostly untrue. I've used Vista on four computers with far less problems than XP. When people read comments like yours they are immediately turned off to Vista, which is terrible from the point of view of someone like myself. Of course you don't want people to use Vista because you hate it, and I am exactly the opposite. So let's just let people try it and make up their own minds, OK?

Edit: Also, it is stupid that you can't buy a laptop without Vista installed. But it's also pretty likely that you have an XP disk somewhere. On newer hardware it takes something like 30 minutes. It's stupid that you have to do that in the first place, but it's still not that hard.

I agree. It is extremely annoying that people make ignorant statements when it's obvious they never tried the OS or used it for 5 min before deciding they didn't like it. People assume Vista uses a ton of ram when in reality it just caches as many of your frequently used programs as it can into ram (aka actually utilizing your ram, unlike XP which just lets the ram sit there unused).

People hear the hard drive working when they first boot up and assume that it means the OS is slow, when in fact it's working in the background not negatively effecting performance at all. Then they look at the task manager and see all of their ram used up and think wow, Vista is a resource hog. They go and reformat without actually trying to use the OS. Because if they did they would realize that Vista is actually faster than XP.

Some of my friends are about to enter a nursing school here. They are required to get new laptops (at least 2GB of ram, 2.2Ghz dual core or better) with XP on them because their apps won't run on Vista. Why nurses need laptops is beyond me, but they asked me for recommendations and I didn't know what to tell them. They aren't techy enough to downgrade themselves.

I haven't seen any program that wouldn't run in Vista at least in compatibility mode (except for maybe an outdated antivirus problem), but if their software truly doesn't work with Vista the school will have to update because XP is being discontinued for good this summer.

I remember when XP came out and people held on to Win98 SE for dear life. They were convinced that Win98 > * and that XP was the devil. Eventually hardware companies stopped providing 98 drivers and they were all forced to upgrade.

Actually, none of us ever have to use vista if we don't want to...

I bet you'd run OS8 on a mac too just because you don't have to run OS10, right?

Nah, for some reason macs are different, arent they? Even though each new OS requires more resources just like Vista, it's still ok for macs.

I have yet to hear a valid argument against Vista.

Sure, if you never upgrade. Good luck finding drivers for XP in the future though. PC manufacturers have already stopped providing them. Also, if you ever want to make use of more than 3.x GB of ram you will need to upgrade to a 64bit OS.

This is a laptop, there's hardly anything that you can upgrade.
Once you have the drivers for everything, you're set.

Downgrading is not always an option. I bought a Fujitsu last summer loaded with Vista HP. Found out my Tascam MIDI box didn't have Vista drivers (at the time), so I tried to downgrade the unit only to find that Fujitsu didn't have any XP drivers available for that laptop model. Wound up with a paperweight until I reloaded the whole thing from the recovery disk. It took until February before Tascam had a workable Vista driver.

You're entitled to your opinion, even if it it is wrong.

I know, its very amusing. These same people will be championing Vista's virtues when Windows 7 is released.

if it worked with the software we used/ sold i wouldnt be still using XP i think. ive read good and bad about it, but the same could be said for when XP first came out too. mines all a compatibility issue, not a like/ dislike thing.

Actually resistance is effective. Latest steam survey shows only 15% of users had Vista installed. And only 10% had Vista + dx10 compatible graphics card, so only 10% of gamers are using DX10. Someone referred to vista as a sidegrade. I see no reason yet to bother with it, and the next win OS will be out by the time I get a new comp.

OP: no, you can't get a laptop with XP, but you can level up your STR and WIS. You need gold to get a laptop.

HMI software that has communications software that runs as a service doesnt work correctly in vista. this has to be completely reworked, from what i hear, and i dont think the big 6 are anywhere near ready to release a new version that is compliant with how vista works with the old services. wonderware and rockwell have both released new versions recently, but were already almost done when vista came out. both released without being vista ready. the software for the nurses is a basic DB program catered to their diagnostic needs most likely, my kids doc uses a touch screen lappy to enter info while talking to us. way better than paper and pencil, then having to type it all in later. the program probably has some of the same issues and just needs to be rewritten to work in the vista way. whos gonna pay for that?

its not that they wont run, its that they run like crap and its not worth the headache getting it to work

my brother goes to school for comp programming, and even they dont use vista

as for my opinion on vista, i installed 64 bit version when i build my new computer
i have had 0 issues with it in 3 months, no idea why people hate on it for personal use

Fixed for reality ;)

Obviously, it can be done with some models...but it's a major experimental PITA.

You can still get Lenovo Thinkpads with Windows XP Professional, although you probably won't find that configuration in stores and you'll have to order it online. I know that I was in the same boat as well.

I'm sure that you'll have no problem finding XP drivers for practically any Business class laptop from HP, Dell, or Lenovo if you wanted to reinstall XP yourself, although I wouldn't be surprised if you had trouble finding XP drivers for things like the integrated HDTV tuners or BluRay burners that you might find on the higher end home user laptops.

Nothing personal there Vista fanboys, but laptops are already slower than desktops when it comes to hard drive and graphics card speeds. I don't want to put up with the performance hit that you take by running Aero and having all of those automated Windows Vista system maintenance tasks running in the background. Sure, you can turn them off, but then what's the point of running Vista? Microsoft's newest OS can stay on my higher-end game box, but it's not going my laptop unless they release a streamlined version.

Vista Home Premium works fine on my Acer 5315 laptop with a 1.86 GHz Intel Celeron M processor 540 and 1GB of ram. Aero works fine as well. Full specs. I picked this thing up on sale for $300.
