possible mobo/cpu problem

hi i have newly built a dfi lanparty nf3 250 gb mobo with athlon 64 3000+ and an mge 500 watt vigor psu. so neways, i just finished building this comp, and when i tried to boot it up, everything (lights, fans) would just blink for a half second before it completely shut down again. so after some tinkering i found that when i unplugged the 4 pin connector from the power supply for the cpu, it booted. i dont have an OS or nething yet, i just wanted to see if everything at least started up ok, but i want to figure out whats causing the short when i plug in that 4 pin connector. i dont think its the psu since it starts up and i took everything apart (including heatsink, reseated) and rebuilt it again but to no avail. ne help would be greatly appreciated. thx
