Possible hidden gem: Undertale

Okay, sweetie. Literally every post you make on this website is a complaint about something. You're like a nagging mother-in-law.

Go ahead, click your posting history. See if you can find one single thing that doesn't make it look like you need to change your tampon.

Not sure your protests mean much. The game is VERY popular. Why? Because it is a good game, regardless of the graphics. There are tons of crappy games with nice graphics, go play those. :colbert:

Well, some people agree with me. At least one of them is in this thread.

There are also good games with good graphics. Or at least graphics that are better than bad. For me, this just ruins it.

Do you think this:

Had a higher art budget than this:

Probably just the opposite.

I reaaaaally hate pixel-art too. I thought it was cute the first games I saw like that in kickstarter a few years ago, I even supported a couple, but yeah I agree, it's a fad, it needs to die.

Kingdom looks better than most games, 2D or 3D.

It's pixel art aesthetics is just top notch.

Art is subjective that way!

Saying that, Undertale is not hidden at all. It's critically acclaimed and very well known gem.

Hard to say art like this is not beautiful!!

Yeah, it's basically blown up now. I got it in early November and it's easily one of my favorite games of all time. They have it chopped down to $8 for the Steam sale.

I jumped on it while it is on sale. I am...confused what all the hype around it is. Aside from the 'don't kill anything' path (which is really just the opposite of kill everything so it isn't any different at all) it isn't really anything new. I am only just now getting out of the beginning labyrinth area though so maybe things will change up a bit.

Hype is always a dangerous thing. It can raise one's expectations way beyond what the game is capable of, even though this game is incredible to me. I guess it helped that all I did was see the labyrinth area in a playthrough and buy it based on that alone.

My 12 year old daughter is beyond in love with this game.
The style.
The story.
The game play.

I mean she is BONKERS for it.

Also, Rakehellion's stupidity in this thread is awesome.

The hype came from people posting the game all over Tumblr claiming it was the forerunner in political corrected gaming.

I tried playing this game. After the first session, I have never had the desire to load it up again. It just wasn't enjoyable at all.

Oh I don't have an issue with the game. I like it...what I can't understand is why there is hype around it and how it got so popular. Doesn't seem like a game most people would like -- very niche.

I really love it because it actually has a story. There are twists I would love to discuss, but spoilers obviously.

Where did you get to?

yahtzee called it the best game of 2015; i am not so convinced. it's a meta-fourthwall-rpg, a mishmash of puzzle adventure hack n slash, comedy drama (with a very japanese morality twist at the end),very similar to the stanley parable and just as bad .. with added bad graphics and bad sound. more than a game, `it's an interactive story - which i don't like. i mean, i don't like the story itself.
OR the genre. or the ridiculous over the top characters.
it makes me think of .. that game that was famous about 2 years ago, about the girl who explores a house .. and finds that some other girl ran away because she went lesbian or something. Justine? Josephine? something like that.

so yeah, it's bad.

i played about half of it, then gave up because it was just unbearable. slow, horrible music, bad graphics, grindy, horrible puzzles, forced comedy, bad dialogue.
or in just one word, "art".

then i read the wikipedia entry for it, read the plot, and i consider to have finished the game, because that's it, you just play it to read the story and find out THE PLOT TWIST !
but the gameplay itself is pathetic.

Horrible music? That's got to be the first time I've heard someone say that. The game's soundtrack is pretty regularly praised.

Comparing it to Gone Home is just weird, I can't think of any way in which those games are similar except they're both indie and praised by critics. Only Undertale is actually nearly universally liked in user reviews too (approval rating on Steam is a very high 97.5%, vs 76.7% for Gone Home which isn't very good for Steam, also 8.2 vs 5.4 on Metacritic)

Also don't see how it can be described as "grindy", the game can be beaten fairly easily without gaining a single level, and even then there isn't any need to seek battles for gold. The only way it's grindy is if you do the genocide run.

Bottom line, people aren't liking this because they view it as some kind of high art but because it's a solid game.

Generally speaking, I don't think the game was designed for males in the 20-50 age range. There's A LOT more gamers out there than our narrow slice of the pie covered in these forums. We are a growing minority.

To say it "sucks" because you don't like it is very close minded.
I don't like Rush or Pink Floyd but I"m not arrogant and dumb enough to say they suck.

The game was designed by a male age 20-50 and I really don't think explicitly reaching to any particular different demographic was a consideration.

Undertale has been very highly rated and popular on Steam. Steam is 95% male (https://medium.com/steam-spy/understanding-your-game-through-data-8b09ca93ec11#.so9j0mnbh) I don't have age demographics for Steam but lots of surveys show that gamers in general are strongest in the 24-40 or so age range these days.

If Undertale was designed for a different demographic in mind it should have been released on phones.

you know, the first puzzle you come across? just after you get your cell phone, the room with pink tiles, and when you walk over some invisible spot, you fall down and need to go back up to minesweep again, a dozen times, until you find a path ?

you know the two skeleton brothers, making puns, and then making puns about making puns?

yeah i really can't tolerate that stuff. i have barely a couple hours to play during the day, i'd rather not waste them with games that rank n1 in the pretentious list.

the reason why undertale is so similar to gone home, it's because the gameplay is irrelevant. it might as well be a video, and undertale is far better as a video, if you watch someone walkthrough it, rather than enjoyable being at the controls.

tbh i wouldn't even classify it as a game.

The music is regarded as good, the plot isn't bad, there is no grind. and the forced comedy is part of the game. Slightly spoiler-y for those that like the game, but I got to the very end within 7 hours.

Do you mean the room with flowers below?

What plot exactly? Seemed like it basically disappeared for 95% of the game. The intro is exposition, then more exposition during what is essentially the tutorial, then nothing again until the final 10 minutes. What a lame ending it was too, the pacifism mechanics are so contrived, it removes any emotion or actual role playing from the games choices. So the ending just turns into a meta game circle jerk, like the rest of the experience. Or did I miss anything major between all the horrendous jokes, and arbitrary "monster" encounters. Oh look! That talking house plant has postpartum depression, I better play awkward Truxton to cheer it up.... uhg.

You mean where the grass below showed where the holes were above? I guess you didn't realize that...

To each their own, a lot of people found the game's attempts at comedy to actually be funny.

You're commenting on the gameplay and calling it a non-game but you quit early and then read plot summaries, so how do you even know about the gameplay?

The bosses in the game (after the first one) each have different gameplay styles, it's actually pretty varied compared to standard RPG stuff. And the two in the genocide run are really challenging, especially the second.

It can't compare with a game that consists of walking around a house and looking at things.
