i have a 13gb boot drive with my win 98se OS installed, along with all my other applications. my D drive is a 120gb. it seems that when i try and copy (large) files between the two drives, it will freeze up. i wrote a quick proggie that does a one byte at a time transfer, and it does fine, it just takes forever. Im not sure which drive is at fault, but the transfer rate with my program registers at only 4kbps. I know because of limitations of the program, its max speed is 70kbps, but 4k is just sad. also, when ripping a CD to mp3s on my D drive, i will get a BSOD saying "cannot write to drive D, data may be lost...blah blah" im currently running scandisk on it( D drive, standard and surface scan), and ill see how that comes out.

edit: could this problem be in my settings at all?
another edit: scandisk made it as far as the 1200th cluster in the data section of the surface scan before the light got pegged, and it froze up.

heh, im not sure, it had the BSODs when i first got it (june 2002) and made large transfers, but then it seemed to get better, and now they are back. id hate to have to repartition the thing, thats lots o backup CDs, and the chance that it will freze during backup...

I"m not sure why you'd want to use that 13 gig drive instead of the 120 gig for your os, assuming the 120 is faster (or is the 13 gig a faster scsi drive?). If the 13 gig is slower, just set that aside on the other ide cable and use it for backups and such, I"m sure 120 gigs on the main drive would be fine...

the problem is, i dont know which one is the problem on the transfer lag, thou i do believe its the 120gb because of the BSODs. the 13gb is not SCSI, i just thought it would be easier than having partitions for OS and moving my data. way before, i couldnt burn off the 13gb, and so i started to save everything to the 120. i can burn off of both drives now, but its recent problems have me wondering.

i guess ill just wait it out til it gets better, gah...
