I was looking through rebateshq.com and a rebate for the 40GB Maxtor came up:

Promotion Description: $40 Rebate with Purchase of Maxtor 40GB 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (SKU:428386)

So, I go on and search for the drive on pricewatch.com and came up with many of them selling it for $72 shipped.

Fascinating! But did you actually read the rebate on the next page? It says this:

Rebate applies to a Maxtor 40GB 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive Model #L01J040G (SKU 428386) purchased at Staples stores, Staples.com or Staples Direct only.

At Staples, that drive is $100 right now. So,
What do you guys think?
Do you think that a 40 gig drive is a good deal at $80? This is one thing that these forums point out to us, that a lot of people ask questions that they could answer. They just need to learn how far to go, to know what they've got ahold of. I've seen any number of new guys ask stuff like, "Well, how much is the shipping?" They start to earn respect when they actually go look it up and post the answer. It's a matter of getting seared, like a good steak, so that they keep their juices in.

hmm so theoretically you could

Call Staples to order the drive for $100, but have them pricematch it to one of the $72 sites...
use a $10 off $50 coupon, then send in the rebate and Voila!

40gig for ~ $20
