possible corrupt HD or folder?

Needing to recover data from a dead laptop I took the HD out and put it into a USB HD enclosure. New computer reads drive just fine and can move tons of data off of it.

But the profile directory in "documents and settings" that contains just about everything I need has a file size of zero and trying to access it brings up an "access denied" message box. There was no compression or encryption that I know of on it.

Any ideas or is it just gone? Any recovery tools out there? What's weird is all other folders on the drive have no trouble at all.

I don't remember the exact process. but I think you have to disable simple file sharing and do something along the line of taking over the harddrive.

Basically the old harddrive has an option of not allowing other users to access private data selected.

Thanks. however the HD is from a dead computer, I may try to plug the USB/HD case into my desktop to see what is up.

It just seems like I can't figure out if it is corrupt or if this is a security issue. I'm not very good at PC stuff. 🙁

Woot! 🙂

I encounter this all of the time when I am servicing computers, so knowing how to bypass it comes in handy and my customers love me for it.
