Possible Classaction lawsuit over X-Box?

There's been a lawsuit filed against Microsoft because an XBox system stopped reading discs (games or otherwise) after less than one year of use.'The defective XBox's stop working after minimal usage, after unreasonably, unconscionably, unusually and unexpectedly short amounts of time,' the lawsuit said. The suit will probably become class action, and seeks to represent anyone who has purchased an XBOX since the 2001 launch.

Guess we'll have more details for when it goes classaction

The original PSX was actually that the first batch used a plastic laser (This is what i was told so dispel my rumors) so over time you ahve to have the psx upsidedown to read right totally. my friend has one of the first psx's and after 2 years he had to do that (Still runs fine tho ^^)

I haven't h eard this with the ps2 at all, and my friend even has a japanese launch ps2 that runs beautifully

Heh I know most launch PS2's had faulty lasers. You never heard of the famous disc read error or the famous method of fixing it temporarily?

I owned one PS2 that I had to open up and clean every week or 2 of playing it for long periods of time. Had a friend who had to send their launch system in almost 3 months after buying it. Well the lasers rarely died they would either just read CD based games or DVD based games. It would read one or the other but not both. This didn't happen to all launch systems but to most. They was suppost to add a newer laser to v5 and above systems.

It doesn't use a magnate top like most other PC optical drives or stereos. It uses 3-4 ball bears that spring in when you put the game in and then spring back out to hold the game in place.

Kinda hard to explain. The Playstation uses the same setup as a portable CD player in other words.

WTF is the problem? My DVD-ROM drive started having problems reading discs ~2yrs after I bought my XBox. Guess what? I called up MS and they had me send it to them in a prepaid box. They fix it and sent it right back to me. So what's the problem?

Oh come on now. How can the greedy lawyers make any money if you do that? :p ;)

The famous issue on the PSX was having to flip it over after the CD was in the drive. I remember it fondly from college :). The famous PS2 issue is having it stop reading either DVDs or CDs and then having to play with the gear ratio on the drive to get it reading whatever it can't read anymore. These are both semi offtopic, but I know them better than any xbox issues :).

Electronics are very fragile for the most part and they do fail. Lame...

Corporate shakedown?

I imagine tons of people will file who never had a problem with their Xbox, MS won't be able to make people prove that their Xbox actually died, and the lawyers will be the ones getting rich from it all.

The problem with the Xbox systems are the faulty Thompson drive units. Anybody else hear of another trouble area ?

MS is AWESOME with their support. Like I said, I bought my XBox in 2001 and after ~2years the drive went bad on me. Called MS, they sent me a prepaid box to ship my XBox to them, they replaced it and sent it back. So what's the problem?

Well my PSX never failed and my PS1 didn't either(Don't ask why I got both). The ps2 started getting errors and was a known problem for every person I ever knew that got one. They did not last at all.

My freind had a Ps2 that crapped out.

We openned it up and looked at it. What happenned was the dust got caked around the edge of the lens, so that it was a hard crust and it was creaping up to the middle of the the glass. That's why overtime the load times got longer and longer, and eventually became unrelaible.

We VERY carefully cleaned off the lens and reassembled and it worked just like it was new.

It's a pain to get to, though. I think that there is a certain amount of scamming that is going on with repair places getting people to buy refurbished versions rather then offering a quick fix.

Some Ps2 do have relaibility issues, though.

Probably the same thing happenned to the Xbox? But it took a long time to get that dusty crust on the lens like that, I don't see that happenning in under a year, unless you have dirty carpet your laying the box on or whatnot.

Sony replaced my first-generation PS2 no questions asked when it began having disc read errors.

It wasn't the hard drive that went out, it was the DVD-ROM drive.

I predict a settlement along the lines of "10% off purchase of an Xbox2."

There's only one winner in a class action suit...and it's never the plaintiffs.
