Hey guys, I was thinking about becoming a game or movie critic. What are you guys' opinions on this sort of job? What would be the average income of someone working in the field? Have any of you guys done this before? How would I go about getting started in the field?

Please tell me all you know about this type of career, and any suggestions and or tips you guys may have.

Hey guys, I was thinking about becoming the head of a multi-national software company. I plan to go to college and stuff. How does that sound?

No way. It's probably quicker - and more profitable to get into the porn industry.

Don't expect to make very much unless you become the next Roger Ebert.

True. I think for most people in the industry - who are not as popular as Roger Ebert are more along the lines of a regular media journalist.

Journalism degree to start

Ensure you take Film as Literature classes

Make $20K a year out of college at some SMALL local paper

Beg a local radio show to give you 4-minutes of air time Friday morning to discuss the latest movies releasing.

Hope your writing is witty and some large middle of the road newspaper picks you up.

Hope Ebert dies from fat bastardism and Roeper whos gayer than a football bat wants to cornhole you and hires you to replace him.

Road to your own show, a leaky ass, and $$$$$

How likely is this scenario, aside from being cornholed by Roeper, this will never happen your 15yr old pimply faced ass.

I worked as a game critic for a relatively large website (as big as they get if they aren't owned by a larger company), although it was all volunteer work to gain experience. The advantage was I got free video games and movies to review, but the work isn't all fun and games. In fact, it's difficult, and because I didn't see the point of researching and writing about Arctic Thunder for XBox or some other crappy game, especially when there are so many reviews out there that'll probably end up saying the same thing, I was able to find out early that it wasn't the career path for me.

Being a critic involves a lot of writing, and although you may enjoy film and video games, you may find you don't enjoy writing long articles about them.

If you still want to do it, then I'd recommend a bachelor's degree, writing for a decent sized game review site, your school newspaper, a newspaper internship, and you're probably going to need to work at another newspaper before a magazine like GamePro or a website like IGN will hire you.

what Fmr12B said.

I don't think you're likely to be able to live off your earnings as a game critic ever, but get a day job and freelance for a local paper to do movie reviews. if you make a name for yourself, you could perhaps turn that into a job that pays well enough to be your only job.

Unless your going to make a serious reply, dont bother posting.

How about this? Unless you're going to bother thinking of a career you actually have snowballs chance in hell of making a decent living at, don't bother asking.
