<< Sources close to AMD's plans in Taiwan said that the price cuts are likely to be in the order of 40 per cent, with the 1GHz microprocessor processor the particular target of the firm's desire. Intel confirmed last week that it would introduce a 1.1GHz Coppermine Pentium III at the end of July in "limited quantities" but is not expected to significantly alter prices on its 1GHz PIIIs between now and September. The bigger firm has conceded that supplies of its processors are currently tight, while some second tier vendors have revealed they have limited supplies of all speed grades of Intel chips until the third week of this month. >>

Saw that at the Register as well. Could this mean they're going to release Mustang? Or will it will just be a speed bump?

Naaaah, they've barely released the chip yet, how could they possibly drop the price 40% on the Duron? I just wanna see a mobo to put the @$%^@#^@# thing in, dagnabit! How can ya release a processor and not have a board to go w/ it! <grumble grumble>

Hmmm, I haven't heard anything about that kind of price drop from my distributors...

The 40% cut will be on the 1GHz Thunderbird. Coinciding with that price cut should be the introduction of the 1.1GHz and maybe even the 1.2GHz Thunderbirds to combat Intel's paper launch of the 1133MHz P3. Those two chips will replace the 1GHz Athlon at the top of the price ladder.
