Hey guys,

Just wanted to say thanks in advance for looking.

So, I have an opportunity to purchase a 1999 R6.

I'll be the third owner, and only have a limited history of the bike as I haven't inquired too much about it yet. It has about 30k miles on it, it's been dropped at least once and one of the fairings is cracked. It seems to have a transmission problem, which is pretty common for the early R6 generation. It can either be rounded gears, shift fork problems, or just a loose spring, either way, it'll cost time and money to fix (most of it mine).

So the transmission will need a complete fix, or just fix the broken parts (but why not just replace the entire thing). Also, I have heard of doing a straight swap with an 03 transmission, so that's an option.

He is asking for $2000, since he called a mechanic and got a $2500 repair quote (which I think is a bit high). I am contemplating buying it because I don't mind repairing it myself as I have experience with fixing cars and have no fears with attempting to fix a motorcycle.

I'm having problems trying to hunt down the price on purchasing an entire transmission, so any advice would be great on that.

Cliffs:
1999 R6
2nd gear slipping, possible transmission replacement
30k miles, dropped 2-4 times (unsure), has a cracked right fairing
Asking $2000
KBB/NADA: $4000/$3500

Should I try getting it for less? I've looked at 99 bikes on craigslist and it ranges from 2500-3800 for pristine and highly modded models. So I think his asking price of $2000 is a bit much, especially without a proper diagnosis of the problems.

Thanks again!

30K miles and $2K ?

No fricken way, that thing should be a little north of 1K for that to be a worthwhile purchase (that's WITHOUT transmission problems). $2K is a ripoff...

Also you do realize that the transmission housing is one piece with the engine block, right? So you'll have to pull out the whole thing to tear it down.

By the numbers he provided you will spend $4500 and you will have a $2500-3800 bike that is NOT pristine?

Well, he only got a phone quote, so I know for sure it's a bit high. I posted the same question on some MC forums and so far I've gotten one reply saying that it's a decent deal seeing as a tranny is 200-500. Of course, once you get a mechanic to do that then labor goes through the roof. I can do the repairs myself.

Find something else. A sport bike with 30k miles doesn't deserve 2k unless it's in showroom condition. I wouldn't give more than $500 for it. After that, I'd part it out and use the motor in a go-kart.

I wouldn't buy a bike with a bad tranny unless it was an outstanding deal. The reason is that you don't know what you're getting into. You could very well have metal shavings from the tranny all through the motor. Bad juju no mater how you cut it.

QFT...OP, do you really have the money for a bike and gear?

This sounds like someone hoping to buy a disaster case of a bike and think just changing the oil is all that's needed.
