Portrait of a younger, equally incompetent young man

The story/interview

The widow of a Bush family confidant says her husband gave the future president an Alabama Senate campaign job as a favor to his worried father. Did they see him do any National Guard service? "Good lord, no."

...

Allison also confirmed previously published accounts that Bush often showed up in the Blount campaign offices around noon, boasting about how much alcohol he had consumed the night before.

...

"After about a month I asked Jimmy what was Georgie's job, because I couldn't figure it out. I never saw him do anything. He told me it basically consisted of him contacting people who were impressed by his name and asking for contributions and support," Allison said.

....

[Bush] neglected his other duty: the mundane but important task of mailing out campaign materials to the county campaign chairs. Archibald took up the slack, at Allison's request. "Jimmy didn't say anything about George. He just said, 'These materials are not getting out. It's causing the candidate problems. Will you take it over?'"

....

Allison remembers encountering George W. Bush in the parking lot, urinating on a car, and hearing later about how he'd yelled obscenities at police officers that night. Bush left a house he'd rented in Montgomery trashed -- the furniture broken, walls damaged and a chandelier destroyed, the Birmingham News reported in February. "He was just a rich kid who had no respect for other people's possessions," Mary Smith, a member of the family who rented the house, told the newspaper, adding that a bill sent to Bush for repairs was never paid. And a month later, in December, during a visit to his parents' home in Washington, Bush drunkenly challenged his father to go "mano a mano," as has often been reported.

What a pathetic specimen.

CycloWizard, I assure you the people who did that in college are equally unsuited to be President of the United States and control a nuclear arsenal.

Hey, and I didn't know you were only interested in yesterday's news? I guess we should put aside Kerry's vote against the war budget? And his alleged non-service in Vietnam?

Please, put aside Vietnam! I've been trying to do that since it came up. The war budget is politics, since this is P&N, it can stay. Personal attacks are not political issues, nor does someone's actions in youth speak necessarily speak anything about their future leadership or character.

I'm not willing to look past character flaws when it comes to the President of the United States of America and the man that controls our nuclear arsenal. And while you aren't interested in the candidates' pasts, a lot of other people are. Don't be afraid not to enter this thread anymore. 😉

i trust you wont be voting for kerry then right, since he admitted to committing war crimes? since past character flaws are so important...

I know Hannity loves that line, but you should go read the transcripts before you post that again.

?Yes, I committed the same kind of atrocities as thousands of other soldiers have committed, in that I took part in shootings in free fire zones, I conducted harassment and interdiction fire? I took part in search and destroy missions in the burning of villages.?

These were standard procedures in Vietnam. No one was ever charged with war crimes for them. Do you always slander people who fight in wars to protect your freedoms?

Their being 'standard procedure' doesn't mean they're not war crimes.

Kerry never said that *he* committed the atrocities, but that people in the group that he represents may have.

Perhaps, because at that time he was in the ANG?

Better not tell that to Republicans! According to their campaign against Senator Kerry you must never change your mind about anything.

Sir, if you ever go hang out with military boys for a night on the town, this will happen. I've done it, and let me tell you, ending up with someone pissing on the car is the least of your worries (I believe we ended up with the speaker from Wendy's in the trunk of the car). The military life is stressful, even the air national guard, and they drink to deal with it - this is nothing new.

Changing political positions and your lifestyle/character are two different things.

Hmmmm, could the dems turn this into a smear campaign somehow? Perhaps they could enlist the assistance of the "drunken frat boys for truth" ...

😛

People make mistakes and poor decisions. As a current college student, God knows I've made enough of my own. But that doesn't change the fact that they are still mistakes and poor decisions. I see what you're saying, and I can understand why that kind of stuff happens, but that doesn't make it OK...if you see what I'm getting at.

I've spent the last two years of my life confronting drunken idiots who have no respect for other peoples' property, and my first instinct is to say that such people have innate character flaws. I've had my share of drunken fun, but never have I driven while drunk nor have I damaged anyone's property while under the influence - they are instincts that are foreign to me.

However, I have seen countless cases of people who change over time, and certainly no one person's character is set in their childhood or even in their college years, and sometimes those who do some of the stupidest things are the ones who end up the wisest and most well-adjusted.

I cannot judge those around me based solely on their past behavior, although I get my rent through judging their immediate behavior. I wrote one of my residents up for smoking pot in the dorms - she's now a friend and a business associate. I've gotten into trouble as well, and I pray that now, and especially ten, twenty, thirty years in the future, no one judges me harshly for such youthful idiocy.

We are not necessarily bound by our past mistakes, and I thank God for that.

How nice of them to make an exception in Senator Miller's case!

Man you are so full of sh!t. While I think the Dub is and has been a poor President the last thing I worry about is him getting drunk, peeing on the tires of Air Force One and trashing the Oval Office. The day he put down the drink was the day his character changed!
