I'm sure many of you guys are familiar with Portishead... I love their style and I have all their CDs, and some extra stuff I've found elsewhere... but they are completely unique as far as I can tell.. I've searched far and wide but havent found anyone else who creates this type of music?... does anyone else know of any?

..never heard of it; is that the stuff that makes you wear your pants (which are triple your regular waist size) backwards? :)

The genre you're looking for is Trip Hop. I love it. Portishead is the best:)

Good list, SG. I'd also like to throw in Supreme Beings of Leisure. They're a bit more funky than most of the groups listed, but that's a good thing in my book. :D

You might like Bjork, too. Kind of a different style. But for trip-hop, Portishead is the only group worth listening to.

Beg to differ. All of the artists/bands that I have listed are definitely worth OWNING if you are into trip-hop.

Bjork is okay. She makes too much sense to be considered trip hop;)

Great list Supergroove. Definitely have to agree on Esthero,
"Breath from Another" is an awesome album and most of her other
stuff I found through Napster and Bearshare is great too.

Definitly like their stuff... but not as.... deep... dark and sexy as portishead

<< Massive Attack >>

Tricky's first record, Maxinquaye, is spectacular. The newest Massive Attack LP, Mazzanine, is great as well. I think these two in particular stand up as good pop records, with (mostly) great songwriting and tight structures. Whereas, for example, Tricky's second record got *extremely* repetitive at times, and some of the songs seemed like Tricky had been, um, indulging a bit too much and found a noise that hypnotized him.

<< if you like Portishead then I recommend the following:

Hooverphonic
Soma Sonic

danny~!
>>

Hooverphonic is more atmosphere music, whereas Portishead engulfs you into feeling as if you are in another world.

That said, hooverphonic's kind of week.

I do not enjoy any other trip hop artists as much as I enjoy Portishead, however, Tricky, Esthero and Sneaker Pimps are regularly in my CD changer. Portishead NEVER leaves my CD changer.

It dosen't get much better than "blue lines" by Massive Attack. Unfinished Sympathy is incredible! There's a live concert from Royal Albert Hall floating around the net that is one of the best things I've ever heard.

SuperGroove mentioned a lot of good groups but I still think Portishead is a style all their own. They call it spy music. The live album they did from Roseland ballroom is the best recording they have.
