Porting Cell phone numbers

I was wondering if anyone had advice/grips about porting cell phone numbers? Right now I am with Cingular and my contract is about to expire. After looking at some of the Amazon deals, I'm pretty sure I am going to sign up with Tmobile through Amazon.

Does anyone have experience in porting their cell phone number? Will going through an online retailer affect the "portability"?

Thanks for the insight and help.

Porting requires a SSN, give it to Amazon if you trust them, I'd prefer to go to the source. unless maybe Amazon is offering a good deal that no one else has..

amazon usually has excellent deals on cellphones for new activation.

the usual trick that has been going on is to not port your number right away. so just order your phone/plan without porting. and when the phone comes and you're happy with the service (this is also good that you have a trial period so you don't need to port your number back if you turned out not to like your new service), you can come up to T-Mobile and ask them to port your number then.

they will generally charge a fee for 'number change', but in this case you can argue to them that you were trying out their service before you want to decide whether or not you want to port or not. they will usually waive the 'number change' fee then.

...so would I call Amazon BEFORE I purchase the phone and signing a 1 yr with Tmobile to tell them that I want a port a number?

Reason I asked about this situation is because Amazon is the 3rd party seller between me and Tmobile. In any other case I would go to Tmobile directly, but I want to qualify for the rebates Amazon is offering.

thank you for this insight. Do you know if I have to keep the cell phone number I want active with Cingular still in order to port it over? I heard they are suppose to keep recently cancelled numbers on hold for 6 months or so.

i don't have any information about that, but you don't have to cancel with Cingular at all if you want to port.

this is very importatnt: if you have cancelled the Cingular line (presumably after the contract is expired) you will not be able to port it. you can only port a 'live' number. so just let the Cingular line month to month after your contract expired, order your phone from amazon, and if you're happy you can ask T-Mobile to port your number then.

the act of porting your number will automatically cancel your Cingular and they will refund you the prorated amount that you still have with them or bill you the prorated fee if you have charges.

A sub-question: How does Amazon work it's rebates with family plans? Can I buy two phones from Amazon and put them on the same family plan and still get the rebates?
