So, time has come for another periodic upgrade of my main system. Its starting to have problems running the latest games at some insane resolution setting so I guess its time for a replacement.

I'm not much for component replacement, I'd much rather just buy an entirely new system and just reuse things like monitors/keyboards, and maybe optical drives. The problem is, I've started a new job that requires me to travel more often than I'd like and so I've taken to questioning the wisdom of getting a new desktop.

I bought a laptop a long time ago, and can't say that I like how pricey they are for similarly spec'd desktop, but I can accept that. More importantly however, is that I sometimes get sent to the middle of nowhere and am unlikely to get support for fixing a laptop. At least, with a desktop, I can diagnose and likely fix the problem myself or, in the worst case scenario, run along to the nearest town with a PC parts shop and buy a replacement for whatever component that's gone boom.

Which brings me to the idea of shuttle PCs. I have absolutely NO experience with them whatsoever. I understand that they are just desktops scaled down in size. Will I have any hardware issue (such as maybe a graphics card that won't fit for example?). Or, should I just buy a desktop, get one of those light aluminum casings and just bring it around with me?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hmmm..... It seems to come down to how long you stay at said places and how often you move your computer around, also what transporting it entails. If you move somewhere new say like once a month and you do it by car and you can easily put your computer in your car and go then why not stick with a desktop. My understanding of shuttle PC's is that they still use the same ATV form factor so fitting things inside shouldn't be a problem. Another question who is paying for this new computer? Is it paid for by work? Does your job require computer use, if so you could try and hit work up for a cheaper laptop to take around with you. Also how much do you play games? What is your main intention of use for a computer?

Sorry, I should have specified. Transporting will be by car. I can afford it myself, my company will provide me with an extremely low spec laptop and I admit, I use my desktop for games mainly, hence why I don't know if I want to invest in a laptop that adds quite a substantial overhead to costs especially with high end specs.

go with a MATX, with like a qpack case or similiar MATX/SFF case. One that uses regular size ATX power supplies so that you can still have the power to run a higher end video card. More portable than a full size ATX system, and still powerfull
