Portable memory storage; pros & cons.

I'm looking to get one of these USB memory devices (didn't want to call them memory sticks) and wanted input on what to get or not get.
I don't have a specific use for it other than general data transfer, jpegs and maybe music.

These haven't been out that long and I question the long term use and reuse of these, how immuneare they to static and external EMF?

Also how about compatibility between different O/S's and chipsets and how they get or don't get recognized?

Hope all of that made sense. BTW, I'm running 2k if that matters.

Ive never seen or heard of any USB portable memory devices, thumb drives, memory sticks having any compatability issues with Win 2k or XP. I use a portable MMC/SD memory card reader and MMC's without any trouble or need to install drivers on win 2k/xp systems at home or university.

About the other issues you mention, I cant comment.

I've had a 48 meg Sony for two years. It's been flawless. I use it for backing up Quickbooks at the office, and moving files to other computers. Back then it was quite expensive. Later on I bought a 128 meg Simpletech, and I use it at home and on trips with my Tablet. No problems there, either. <my 2 cents>

Do I understand correctly you can boot from one of these devices (didn't want to call them 'drives')? As in getting into someones box that is password protected by bypassing the orginal O/S (not that anyone here would do such a thing)?
