i have a couple ports i need forwarded that include http and ftp. in the protocol settings, do i select tcp, udp, or both? what are the differences?

You should select TCP only.
according to the type of file u can prefer TCP/UDP
if the file contains imporatnat discussion and if u want to provide security u can prefer TCP, however it doesn't problem u can prefer UDP

Huh? The data being passed has no bearing on what protocol you use, you have to use the protocol that the application was designed for and with HTTP and FTP that is always TCP.
what about bit torrent? would that be udp since it's a p2p program?
