port forwarding

alright basically i m just trying to figure out the principles behind port forwarding and not port forwarding. i m not running any port forwarding right now and everything works fine except BT++. the download speeds are ridulously slow. i guess what i am asking is why is this needed for this particular program, and what makes a program fall into that category?

thanks that helped a bit. however, if my BT client waiting for more people to download from, how is that not a request waiting on a reponse?

I believe the BT client has to maintain some type of ratio for u/l and d/l. So if noone can connect to upload from you then it slows down your d/l. That is just a guess on my part never actually ran BT but read a little about it.
