Any opinions on these? Another pipe dream for my next car. Impossible mid engine maintence, slow for the price, and 'not a real Porsche' I assume?

30 grand gets an 06-08 Cayman S with ~30k miles. Car looks damn nice to me... with M3 prices being nearly the same (or more) I think I'd like the cayman.
 
Caymans are fantastic drivers cars. Maintenance is relatively cheap on them and they have no IMS issues to speak of. They handle better than 911s and aside from the premium you will spend on tires you should have trouble free miles. Get an inspection on one if you want to be sure.
 
Friend has a 2008 S that he bought new and has kept pretty mint. A lot of fun to drive, but the cockpit is just a little too tight for me. If it was even close to a daily driver, this would keep me from buying and I would get a 911 or M3 instead.
 
The best handling cars I have ever driven are caymans/boxsters. I don't care for the 911 dynamics, but the cayman is great. They're just underpowered for my tastes.
 
Co-worker has an older S, but it seemed pretty nice and doesn't have any maintenance issues. I was just not impressed with the power when winding it out.
 
You guys are nuts about power lol... its got 300hp and weighs less than 3k pounds. I'm sure it will be plenty for me considering my mini has 180hp at a similar weight.

you will want the 987.2 (2009+) for the DFI engine, improved torque and wider track; also the 09 base is about as fast as the older S. I used to own a 2008 Boxster and now have a 991 911 Carrera S.

Maintenance isn't bad if you do work yourself or do to an indie shop, was a really reliable car for the 5 years I owned it even though I drove it hard and tracked it 15 times.

The build quality should be much better than BMW as Porsche and Lexus were #1 and #2 in reliability around those years. I had a radiator, battery and the PCM unit go out on me during the warranty period and they were all covered. Recently, my warranty expired and I opted not to get the extended. In contrast, I did get the extended warranty on my IS-F and that turned out to be the correct choice. A couple of weeks ago, I had to use that warranty yet again. Typical oil change is $200 on sale at dealer or $300 when it's not on sale.

It hits 0-60 at 4.5 seconds IIRC, so I wouldn't say it's "slow." It's fast enough on roads that you won't ever use it's full potential. While my GT-R is fast in a brutal, ham-fisted sort of way, the CS is more quick on its feet. It's very maneuverable and in 2009 was voted best driver's car.

Yeah, but even still we're saying it's a great car. That should tell you something 🙂 If I wanted a 3rd car, it would probably be a cayman.
 
That Cayman S sounds like a fine sports car and has a sexier look to it than the 911 (IMHO). The Aerotect mentioned in the above link seems like it's well worth the price if it has good longevity.

It's really a better car design by far. The only problem is that Porsche keeps it underpowered because heaven forbid the 911 not be their marque car. Gotta keep that engine hanging out the back, ugh.

For the record, on my CS I used Venture Shield and I parked it outside since I've owned it. The film started disintegrating after about four years. My IS-F also has Venture Shield and it too disintegrated after about four years. Both stained pretty badly from water and bird droppings.

On my GTR, I used XPEL Ultimate and I've been pretty happy with it. It's about 2.5 years old with no signs of wear.

When I find the time, I'll have the IS-F and CS redone with XPEL.
 
I drove my friends boxster R and it was outstanding. The transmission shifts were buttery smooth. Didn't get to drive it hard unfortunately - only a street test.

I assume the cayman would be even better

That would be 2009+ cayman, the earlier ones do use an immediate shaft.
 
Every time I see the title, I keep reading it as cayenne, and I think to myself "Of course that's not a real Porsche." No problem with Caymans though.

Indeed some believe that the Cayman is the closest to Porsche's roots in their entire lineup.
