EDIT: Yes, the 912 was an official model by Porsche. It used a 911 body and a VW flat-4 engine, was an entry-level model in the late 1960's, was replaced by the 914, and then came back for one year with the 914's 2.0 litre flat-4 in 1976 as the 912E.
