SEATTLE - There were a few surprises for the University of Washington's Class of 1957 when they opened a time capsule sealed 50 years ago.

Among audiotapes and copies of the yearbook and school newspaper were 1980s-era porn, a condom and some dirty underwear.

Alumni opened the capsule earlier this week in preparation for a public unveiling Saturday during a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the university's communications program. The capsule had been placed in an interior wall of the then-new Communications Building in 1957.

The capsule is being replaced by another created by a student-faculty team.

"The good news is that all the things that were in there are still there," said Jerry Baldasty, chairman of the Department of Communication. "The interesting news is that some other things were added."

There aren't any suspects in the case. But it was located outside the offices of The Daily _ the campus newspaper _ and it's assumed someone from the paper was responsible for the revisionism, said communication alumni and development manager Victoria Sprang.

The new capsule will be filled with digital media with a focus on "communication from a global perspective," said Coma Te, a senior among six students who created the new capsule.

Apparently someone busted through the wall where it was stored and put late 70s Playboy and Hustler in there.

So we got an authentic look at 50's college life instead of the "official" glimpse, then?

Good on them.

No kidding. 50 years from now we'll pull it out and look at a metallic box with a USB port and people will be wondering where the hell they could find something that will accept a USB device in 2057. Sorry, that's USB 2.0 which isn't compatible with Windows 2060 and USB 25.0. We have no way to communicate with this device.

Meh, weird double post fluke (probably caused by the Woot-off). See the post directly after the one you quoted.

M J Fox put it in when he went back in his DeLorean.

I'm rather surprised they had the foresight to open this beforehand instead of at the public unveiling. I guess Geraldo can teach us all a lesson.

Wow. That is such an obvious problem I can't believe no one at the school pointed it out. They'll be able to determine what the items are (USB memory stick, DVD, whatever) but will never be able to read them.

Kind of funny in a way - 100 years from now, we'll probably know more about the day-to-day lives of the people from the 1700's than we will about society today. The newspapers from 200 years ago will still be around and usable, and all the digital data from today will be gone because no one will be able to read the current formats (not just the physical format, but the programs used to create it will also be gone), and very soon we'll realize there is just too much data to migrate to new formats all the time. It will just be discarded.

if the underwear was "dirty" couldn't they DNA test it and find out the perpetrator?

It's probably too degraded to be tested.
