I have some thin pork slices that I've been wanting to put into a green curry. I've been lazy, though, and haven't gotten around to doing it, yet. The Sell-by-date is 7/9--2 days ago. On one hand, food packagers often overcompensate on these dates. On the other hand, it's freaking pork (not a meat I cook with often).

So, ATOT, should I eat it? Will it make me sick? Will it turn me ghey?
 
You're fine to eat it. I'll say it again because there are so many misconceptions about food safety out there. While America raises some of the worst chicken in the world, our pork is the best. As long as the meat was properly refrigerated, you're good to go.
 
It's only 2 days past sell date, most likely still good, as long as they were honest with their sell date.
 
I thought I got a good deal on buy one get one free bone-in pork chops the other day. The date on the package said 7-9, and I was going to cook them on the same day. After smelling the package, I could tell they were already rotten, and my "good deal" was definitely bad. Just check the smell and if it's good you should be fine.

yup. sell-by dates are completely arbitrary--they are no more standardized than is the DPI rating of a printer. (probably even less so)

what matters is s=constant storage temp. The producer can't control how the customer is going to store the meat, so the date you see on the package should actually be interpreted with a standard deviation of +/- 1-20 days or so.

of course, all food items are different, as they all have their own needs. sure, meat is better the sooner it's prepared, but what about freezing it? what's the point of such a date if you're going to freeze the bastard at -80 C for a few years?
