popups

i have the same pop up coming up over and over again...something xlime.com and it advertises random junk...i have used spysweeper and sybot search and destory but nothing...any ideas

Hi Schadenfroh - are you the same one who tested the Antivirus progs?

Well done if you are - I've just changed to Kaspersky on you recommendation!

I've never used it, but there is a proggie called ADWATCH that comes with Adaware.

Also, if the popups originate from the computer, which it sounds like it might do in this case, then a scan should find something.

TRY Hijackthis and post the log here

That is a good insight. If this is the problem, then you need to get some firewall protection pronto, followed by a rigorous antivirus/antispyware examination of the system.

For a firewall, you could grab a Netgear RP614 to serve as your perimeter firewall, and if it were me I'd either install free ZoneAlarm or use the Windows Firewall from Service Pack 2 as a machine-level firewall software.

For antivirus software, I'd start with a free 15-day trial of McAfee VirusScan 9.0 and then you can decide if you want to buy it or move on to something else. If McAfee detects viruses, then disable System Restore, reboot into Safe Mode, and scan while in Safe Mode.

Microsoft's AntiSpyware Beta1 software could be worth a go too: link to it. And here's one of my  tools: Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.
