POPUPS like CRAZY. Need a software recommendation

AV: Antivir (free, monitoring) or the other free online scanners
Spyware: MS Antispyware, Ad-aware, Spybot, Spywareblaster

I've been using Lavasoft's AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy in combination for quite some time now with excellent results. Each has strengths in areas the other lacks. There are many other decent apps out there which will serve you well, I just have not had enough experience with many others to make a recommendation.

I would add though that AdAware free version is one helluva good place to start.........

As for AV software, I have yet to find an anti-virus app that does not piss me off at one time or another. Good luck with that one 😉

WayneTeK, you've been around long enough to know that you should read the stickies. 😉

If it's at the point where you're getting a ton of popups despite running a good spyware scanner, you may be due for a reinstall - and a user level account. Stop using IE, and those P2P programs you use to d/l goat porn are full of spyware too, so I'd advise against reinstalling them.

I found Web Root Spy Sweeper to be terrific at removing some spyware that was resistant to spybot and lavasoft adaware.

It has a subscription model, but you can run the 14 day trial if you are in dire need. I did this recently for my GF's machine, and it worked wonderfully.

The problem with ad-aware is that is doesn't load ad-watch automatically. The programs is installed but nothing is really protecting you. MS antispyware is a better choice since it runs at startup as default.

1. Spybot S&D
2. Stop watching so much pr0n...........................................................................
.......just a joke 😛
3. ???
4. Profit!

ZoneAlarm Pro 5 suite and Goggle Toolbar has built in popup blocker. The best of both worlds.

Same story for me on various relatives machines. Spy Sweeper worked well and worked fast. MS Anti spyware is pretty good too. See http://www.theflyingpenguin.com/penguin_blog.shtml#spyware-removal if you want more complete and current info.

If the guy has adaware and is still getting popups while on the desktop (no IE running) sounds like it could be look2me or winfix which require more than just antispyware software to remove...those are nasty little buggers. Definately get a hijackthis report and post it.

PcTools has a free adware / spyware program that has caught more junk
than Spybot and adaware combined 2 times over. PaniceWare has one
of the best rated free popup stoppers out there. I use all of the above
mentioned programs and have had a clean computer. The one problem
with PanicWare is it tends to stop popups you want and you have to close it.
Spyware Blaster also works good at keeping junk out in the first place.
All of these are free.
