Webroot is trying to get me to buy its latest version of its Spy Sweeper software via what seems to be a random popup asking me to buy it. I've sent email to the company asking them to stop the popup since I'm not buying the newer version but it persists. Anyone know how to stop it?

post a hijackthis log for review and we will provide you with a solution, see this thread.

If the pop up is caused by adware on your PC, a pop up blocker will not stop it. But if it comes from visiting their website, a good pop up blocker is included in SP2 for XP, which needs to be installed anyway for security reasons. But we need to see a HJT log because from your description, it sounds like adware. If you have an old version of spysweeper, uninstall it and just use Spybot S&D and Adaware SE (both free), an out of date antimalware product that no longer gets new definitions is getting close to being useless.

It could also be one of those dasm IP-spam types delivered by the Messenger service. lobsterpot, for the bigger picture, could you tell us

1) what Windows version you have, including its service pack level (Start > Run > winver will tell you)

2) do you have broadband (college LAN, cable or DSL, etc)

3) do you have a router

4) do you have a software firewall

5) do you share your internet connection with others using your router (wired or wireless)

Download Mozilla Firefox here...and never open explorer again...that's done the trick for me...

I won't guarantee it'll fix your problem, and you might already know about firefox, but just incase...

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'll try out some of your suggestions. I have an old machine with Windows Me, cable, no router, firewall or sharing. The program I purchased online is Webroot Spy Sweeper and is found here http://www.webroot.com/.

You need a firewall and antivirus software. Can I suggest ZoneAlarm free version from zonealarm.com and either go out and buy an antivirus software or try Grisoft AVG Free Edition maybe (grisoft.com). Also hit Windows Update and get all the Critical Updates. You will need to visit Windows Update several times before you'll have all of them, since some can only be installed by themselves.
