The List: How to...

4. Frame a wall
8. Fix a dead outlet
20. Change oil and filter
22. Bleed brakes

However, that list doesn't even begin to encompass the things my father can do that I can't.

He knows how to use all sorts of tools I haven't the slightest clue how to use (never had a shop class) and a lot of knowledge of mechanical/electrical stuff (engines/wiring).

Se that's the scary thing, Kids don't have the option for a shop class. I remember 7th grade our shop class learned about all the power tools, and the big things like band saws radial arm saws, lathes, building CO2 cars, and rebuilding a lawn mower engine.

What really amazes me is that grown men these days don't even know how to change a flat or jump a car. Just yesterday some guy in the parking lot couldn't start his car and was gonig to wait an hour and a half for his wife to show up with a new battery. I offered to give him a jump, but he insisted it was to dangerous. Whatever.

If someone can't do 90% of the things on that list, I'd be pretty amused at Mr. Sissy Boy.

Heck, I'm pretty sure my 17 year old son can do everything on that list, and more. He's re-built dirt bikes; a couple weeks ago, he replaced brake lines (including bleeding the brakes) on his car, and just tonight, he backed a trailer into our barn so we could unload a ton of hay. Plus, at our high school, instead of boring kids with study halls, they offer courses on building construction, welding, etc. So, 1st period: AP Bio, 2nd period: AP English, 3rd period: welding, 4th period Calculus, etc. Last year, he took the lifeguarding class...

Pick a lock should be on that list. Hell a woman can do that if it's the bathroom door!

probably not; AP classes are par for the course these days. only the really dumb/lazy kids are in the average classes. getting into AP is too easy. The average kids are in AP; the kids worth paying attention to are taking college courses at 17. if the kid was worth his salt he'd be taking college credit courses instead of just AP. oh well, that's just the slacker generation, thinking AP is good enough to get by. He likely missed his chance at veledictorian as soon as he chose that welding class.

and lol @ anyone who thinks AP classes are "college level"

That is a lame list. I'm guessing they only put things in there that they clearly referenced in past issues b/c you don't need to know how to catch a fish but you need to know how to fillet one? lol.

Fortunately, once you're in the job market, it doesn't matter whether or not you were valedictorian or if you took AP classes. :p

God forbid should we ever have some kind of real disaster as most of you younger people would be paralyzed without your computers, cell phones, calculators, and all the other technology that make life easy.

I remember one time my dad was away and the family had an emergency trailer situation. No one knew how to back up the trailer! Guess what happened? We all died. It was horrible.

I don't own my own house and don't intend to in the near future so that knocks out a few things, so here are the only things I have actually done:

2. Protect your computer
5. Retouch digital photos
9. Navigate with a map and compass
16. Back up data
17. Paint a room
21. Hook up an HDTV
23. Paddle a canoe (do canoes have 1 or 2 oars? I know I can do boats with 2)
24. Fix a bike flat (I have replaced the tire tube but don't know how to patch a hole)

Here's MY top 20 list of things men should know that I haven't seen mentioned yet by other Anandtechers (admittedly I know some but not all of these):
1. Physical Self defense
2. Money Management / Investing
3. How To Run a Business
4. People skills (see #3)
5. At least 1 popular / semi popular sport
6. Basic weight training/exercise techniques
7. Cooking (that's right. I know a little but wish I knew much more)
8. Hook up a home stereo
9. Dance a little (I can't at all, have NO rhythm)
10. Knowing the law (not to the extent of a lawyer of course)
11. Set up a tent
12. Know how to filter useful/interesting info from junk (news, literature, movies, tv, music, art, people, etc)
13. Research a topic w/o using the internet
14. Write in a clear, logical, and easy to understand manner
15. Wash your own clothes (never did this til I was 18...)
16. Tie a necktie (learned this too late, and haven't done in a while so may have forgotten :( )
17. Knowing one's options in life (this is vague I know, but encompasses several on my list. For instance I'm so goddamn sick of parents putting kids on conveyor belts to college and never even presenting the alternatives, or giving kids the means to find the alternatives themselves)
18. The U.S. Constitution (for those living in America)
19. How to travel
20. How to deal with stress
