Pope: Clergy Sex Abuse Wounds 'Run Deep'
By ALESSANDRA RIZZO, Associated Press Writer
Sat Oct 28, 11:47 AM

VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI said Saturday that clerical sex abuses were "egregious crimes" that had damaged the standing of the Catholic Church and its clergy, in his first explicit remarks on the subject since becoming pontiff.

Speaking to a group of bishops from Ireland _ an overwhelmingly Roman Catholic country where all but one seminary has closed following repeated scandals _ Benedict said it was urgent "to rebuild confidence and trust."

"In the exercise of your pastoral ministry, you have had to respond in recent years to many heart-rending cases of sexual abuse of minors," the pontiff told the bishops. "These are all the more tragic when the abuser is a cleric."

"The wounds caused by such acts run deep," Benedict said.

The pope told the bishops that as they continue to deal with the problem, "it is important to establish the truth of what happened in the past, to take whatever steps are necessary to prevent it from occurring again, to ensure that the principles of justice are fully respected and, above all, to bring healing to the victims and to all those affected by these egregious crimes."

Benedict mentioned only the crisis in Ireland, but his comments were likely to resonate in other nations where the church has been plagued by sex abuse scandals, such as the United States.

In Ireland, the church's moral standing, Mass attendance and applications for priesthood have plummeted since 1994, when the first major scandal involving a pedophile priest triggered the collapse of the government of then-Prime Minister Albert Reynolds.

Since then, both church and state in the country, where nearly 90 percent of its 4 million residents identify themselves as Catholic, have struggled to come to terms with the scale of abuse committed by priests. All but one seminary has closed.

The pope said however that "the fine work and selfless dedication of the great majority of priests and religious in Ireland should not be obscured by the transgressions of some of their brethren."

He added, "I am certain that the people understand this, and continue to regard their clergy with affection and esteem."

Benedict has rarely spoken openly about sex abuse cases.

Some of his strongest comments came in March 2005, shortly before he was made pope. In meditations composed for the Good Friday procession at the Colosseum, Benedict, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, denounced what he called "filth" in the church "even among those ... in the priesthood." Those words were seen by many as a possible denunciation of the clergy sexual abuse scandals.

In May, Benedict asked the elderly founder of the conservative order Legionaries of Christ, Mexican priest the Rev. Marcial Maciel, to stop celebrating public Masses and live a life of "prayer and penance" following a Vatican investigation into allegations he sexually abused seminarians decades ago.

The decision marked the first major abuse penalty approved by Benedict as pope, and showed he was not afraid pursuing prelates who enjoyed particular favor with his predecessor, John Paul II.

In the United States, sex abuse allegations have shaken the church, with 783 new credible claims last year, most of which date back decades, and costs of nearly $1.5 billion since 1950, according to figures compiled from various studies by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The total number of accusations against Catholic clergy in the United States now stands at more than 12,000 since 1950.

PRIEST 1
Yes, but we've got to find out why these
children are suddenly finding it necessary
to report that they're being molested.
Stop the problem at its source.

PRIEST 2
Yes, but how?

PRIEST 3
Somethng has to be done.

PRIEST 4
We've got to stop this-

PRIEST MAXI
Whoa, whoa, hold on a second! The problem
is that children are being molested,
not that they're reporting it!

ELDERLY PRIEST
How do you mean?

PRIEST MAXI
Well, I mean, obviously, what we need
to put a stop to is all the sexual misconduct
that is allowed to take place in our
churches, and not just tell the children
not to tell anybody about it. I mean,
right?

PRIEST 1
Well did any of the children you've
molested come forward?

PRIEST MAXI
No.

PRIEST 1
Well, that's good.

PRIEST MAXI
No, I mean! I've never molested any
of the children in my church!

ELDERLY PRIEST
Hih-it's okay, Father Maxi. We're all
priests here; the doors are closed.

PRIEST MAXI
Oh for the love of God! Are you all
saying that you've engaged in inappropriate
relations with your altar boys? We are
here to bring the light of God, not
harm the innocent! I'm serious!

PRIEST 2
Father, uh, having sex with boys is
part of the Catholic priest's way of
life.

OTHER PRIESTS
Yeah.

PRIEST MAXI
Dear God. This problem is much more
severe than I could have possibly imagined.
I have to go to the Vatican and get
help.

Pervasive paranoia runs deep into society now. Sex offenders are a dime a dozen and almost every block in America has one.

Thankfully the bad priests have been purged. Now to purge society of all sexual predators, be they atheist, protestant, etc.

What? When did this happen?

Most have been fired and / or jailed if the statutes of limitations allowed. Otherwise this is really no more an issue than an in any other industry. How many child molesters work at your company? Do you know? Do you care? Has your company taken steps to fire persons accused / charged with child molesting? Do they have policies in place to deal with it? I would say all of it is unlikey and the church was went through a rude awakening. Many things have changed for the better and you can bet the hysteria has intensified things the point where zero tolerance is the policy.

But then take a look at society in general. I would venture that we have so many sexual predators out there now we need to incarcerate them forever, not flood our streets with them, which is the current situation. Society needs to be purged like the church was.

i think this is a realization of the problem, and admitting the need for the problem to be addressed and ceased.
kudos to the Pope for speaking out when others before him have not.

Yeah, right. What color is the sky in "All the pedophile priests are gone now, we promise" land?

Did the pope offer any comment as to where God has been while this was going on for 2000 years? He supposedly has a direct line to God so that he can enforce HIS will on earth. How come the subject never came up during their daily conversations?

Nope, I don't have a clue, that's why I keep asking the questions, hoping that one of you people that think the church has all the answers can enlighten me. WHERE WAS GOD WHILE THIS WAS HAPPENING? Simple question. Go ahead and answer it.

Troll much? God (should He exist) does not operate according to your own perspectives of what should and should not be. That evil occurs is not a valid argument against the existence of God, except to petulant children.

It's sad that anyone who has the brains to ask honest questions that embarass your set of beliefs is instantly branded a troll. Why are you not asking that very question? If you pray to him to look out for you or your loved ones, if you subscribe to the omniscient/omnipotent belief, then you should be asking how and why he dropped the ball. Why is it so comforting to stick your head in the sand and concede that priests have been molesting kids for 2000 years without their boss stopping them? It's an honest and valid question. God supposedly knows all and has the power to do anything. So if he exists he MUST have know that it was happening and he must have chosen to DO NOTHING. That's your very own system of beliefs "God knows when every sparrow falls, you are worth many sparrows..." yada yada yada. God knew. He HAD to know. If you didn't know then your belief that he's omniscient falls apart. He has the power to stop them, if he doesn't then your belief that he's omnipotent falls apart. So he knew and had the power to make it stop, but for 2000 years he didn't. He sat there and did nothing while his own HANDPICKED REPRESENTATIVES molested kids for 2000 years. And you think that anyone that asks why is a troll? Hey, if that's what you have to tell yourself in order to avoid asking the question yourself, go for it. Delusion is very comforting.

Blah blah blah I am not a Catholic, this has nothing to do with my beliefs, your logic sucks which must be why you resorted to bitter ad hominem.

I have, however, never avoided this question. I am simply so far beyond it in my own personal religious/existential studies that I think it meaningless. Good and evil are matters of perspective. To expect the hypothetical entity known as God to act only from the human perspective is ridiculous. Should the lion not eat because the gazelle thinks being eaten by a lion is an evil?

To me, this would have seemed less like a PR exercise by Benedict had he not been associated with a previous effort to silence public word of this by punishing the victims for failure to publicly denounce the offending priest in a limited amount of time.

If someone is up to date on this issue and can truthfully correct me on this, I'd be grateful.

I do think the celibacy is the cause, combined with the Church's intolerance of homosexuality. Many (perhaps even most) of the people who seem to join the priesthood are people with deep shame about their sexuality, usually closeted homosexuals whose Catholic upbringing prevents them from being open (I have an acquaintance who is a priest who said he felt that nearly his entire seminary class was gay). They think that in a celibate environment, they can wall in their sexuality and take control of their feelings. The reality is that very very few people can really do this, and so they start expressing themselves sexually with the available targets of opportunity. Also, to some extent priests are emotionally and sexually immature (because they have never been in intimate relationships), and so I think children are less intimidating to them than adults as potential partners.

The other issue, of course, is that the Church, unlike most employers, provides these men with unlimited access to children, and the Church as an institution has a shocking history of protecting the offenders at all costs, children be damned. I am grateful things have changed somewhat, but left to its own devices I don't believe the Church would ever have done or admitted anything.

Damn straight I'm a Catholic basher, if you wish to call me that.

I was born & raised Catholic, so I've seen it up close and personal. They never did molest me. Two male nuns (brothers) tried to twice, fvsking asshats!
The Catholic faith is a sick bag of worms. I hope they go down in flames ;)

Now I feel better.
