Normal?

Its a new onkyo sr608, and I only ask because I tried to look up info on it to see if I could just make it stop, and there were huge threads about how it was a problem (mostly from 2008ish). However, it seems like there are a couple different types of pops, the really loud pops that could damage speakers, and pops that happen randomly, and the faint popping.

Mine is kinda faint, just when switching DD/PCM or source kinda thing, just annoying really, especially in DVD menus/trailers.

So I guess, should I be concerned or is it just a fact of life? Any tip on how I might stop it, if its possible, would be nice. If not I will just deal with it.

The sound was really annoying so I am going to return it and get a Denon AVR2311 that I found on sale.

I am hopeful it wont be as bad audibly, but who knows maybe I wont escape it.

I have an onkyo 605 and a newer 807. My friend bought the 608. It does click when switching from say 2.1 to 5.1 as Calvie said, they all do. However if you are hearing pops, actually audible pops in your speakers where you almost think there was a power surge or something, either yes, the receiver is faulty but you could have also set your speakers incorrectly, wiring I mean. Did you run the audessy room correction? Are your speakers rated correctly for the 608 etc?

Yeah, I ran audessy and set the speakers right, its polk monitor 70 / 40 and CS2 center.

They're all wired the same (and correctly).

I actually feel a shock when I touch the front receiver plate, I am thinking there is a ground problem in the receiver.

Either way I'm just gonna return it and have an Denon 3311CI on order, decided to get it for DSX/Networking instead of a 2311.

I have an Onkyo receiver that does the same thing. It's an old cheaper model that I think I paid $70 for so it doesn't bother me much any more.

This was one of the contributing factors for me to trade in my HK avr144. It would have a loud pop from the speakers when changing sources. It only happened with the ps3 though oddly. I tries everything I could think of.

Well I got my Denon AVR-3311CI installed, and its dead silent. Its quite a difference.

No pops, no clicks, nothing.

I am so glad I took the chance because its really nice, I realize its more expensive receiver, but from what I read its common in Onkyo receivers and their engineers think its not a big deal.
