Poor WAN gaming performance - Netgear MR314 ???

I've paired a Netgear MR314 Wireless Router with the MA101 USB Adapter. My ping rate is 3 - 4 ms but every once it awhile it goes into a crazy #, like 2700 ms...then back to the 3 - 4.

I'm less than 20 feet from the router, but there are several walls between the two devices. My ping rates in games seemed to have gone up a little, but it is still very good.

However, playing NHL 2003, I'm getting freezes in gameplay apparently due to lag. When I run a wired connection, this doesn't happen. I've tried different Mbps, Auto, 11, 5.5., 2, 1, and all give the same results.

Any suggestions on the settings? Is there a better wireless combo that will not give me these problems or am I S.O.L.?

Thanks!

This is the nature of the "Wireless Beast", not too much you can do about it.

USB may contribute some what to the lag, try PCMCIA (if connected to Desktop, you need PCI with extrenal Antenna).

I'm sharing an Internet connection over ADHOC 802.11b and every few minutes mine "goes crazy" with pings jumping up to 33,000ms and staying there for minutes at a time! (Yes, I had to specify a huge wait for those results ;)). It's IMPOSSIBLE to download anything over 2MB without it timeing out. Mine is a PCMCIA card connecting to another PCMCIA card in a PCI adapter. The Internet connection is shared by simply bridging the network adapter with the 802.11b adapter (My ISP allows multiple IP addresses, so it works).

Jack, you da Man!

I installed a D Link DWL-520+ PCI Card and like that, my problems went away. Gaming performance has been great so far (5 games...knock on wood). The funny thing is, the signal strength is less than it was with the USB adapter.

Anyways, thanks for all the replies!

...the bad news is that in the process of installing the PCI card I managed to fry my GF 4 4200...back to the old GF3 for awhile...first card I ever fried

The Signal bar is just a representation. A full Signal bar does not mean 11MB/sec. actually no body in the world can get 11Mb/sec. using 802.11b system. The number is a theoretical design number, not a working "Speed transfer".

When using good hardware, like the Orinoco line of Wireless units, a full signal in the same room usually yields 7-8Mb/sec.

In most others a full signal bar probably will represent and yield 4-7Mb/sec.

If your PCI accepts external Antenna you probably will get a furher boost by installing higher up Antenna.
