Somehow, intentional killing of animals without the added intention of eating them afterward (deer hunting is fine, as long as you like venison) strikes me as mildly deranged in an unfortunately common teenage way. I'll admit to having a poor animal avoidance record (flatspotted tires four times, successfully avoided the animal once, and on one unsuccessful occasion there was no injury to the animal), but I always make the best effort I can to avoid the animal without endangering myself or other drivers. I have to find one occasion humerous though. I was driving down a back road at 55-60 with no-one else in sight. I slowed ( to ~45) and merged into the other lane to avoid a flock of birds taking up half my lane. Just as I was passing them, one flew up in front of my windshield moving in the same direction as the car. Unfortunately for him (her?, it?) the car was moving faster and the bird was rear ended. Apparently the speed differential was reduced enough by my braking and the bird's adrenalin, because it bounced off the windshiled and continued flying away with no apparent injury. I can laugh about it because the bird was able to fly away. That said, I feel very guilty still about the rabbit that decided to jump into the road 15 ft ahead of a car moving at 55 mph.
