My system specs are:

P4C800 deluxe latest bios
P4 3.0
1gb pc3200 ram
Gainward 6800GT golden sample @ 400/1100
on board sound
wd 60gig HDD
Lite On CDR
Antec 420watt PS
WinXP pro sp2

I play city of heroes @ 1280x1024 with 4xAA and 4xAF. Now I have tried to turn off AA & AF, turn on the optimizations, tried the original driver that was shipped with card and the newer 66.72's from gainward. In outdoor areas, I range from high 20's down to 1fps.... Indoor missions are a different story, I'm getting anywhere from 90fps to 30fps.

I had a 9700pro before, and performance is similar, IQ is similar. Are these MMO's so taxing that even high end cards are slow?

When I removed the 9700pro, i uninstalled the driver, deleted the folder, restarted into safemode and ran driver cleaner. Removed all ATI files from the system, so driver conflict should not be an issue. I even overclocked the CPU to see if I could get anymore performance, but nothing.

Any ideas would be great. Thanx.

That seems like a classic driver issue anybody with a 6800gt might help you better but a driver must be causing it. Hell Nvidia and Ati have had both many issues with games in the past...go to the Nvidia home page and search for problems relating to this game.

I think service pack 2 was a problem with COH, only in certain cofigs. When you chaned from the 9700 maybe its screwing you up a bit. The earlier accounts said that sp2 incurred a performance hit with coh, i dunno what the deal is now.
thread

check that support thread at the coh boards.

COH is friggn brutal, esp on yer cpu. I had a chronic problem of where it would boot me out unceremoniously, realized my cpu was overheating. Thats the only game that it has ever done that with.

its not nvidia, its sp2
I tried what I could to get CoH and SP2 to play nice.

Depending on what I did, I could lessen the effect of whatever is happening, but I couldn't stop it. My game would slow down, the framerate slowly dropping until I just couldn't take it anymore, usually around 20 minutes, and I would exit CoH.

Finally, I decided to uninstall SP2. Control Panel--> Add/Remove Software--> SP2

CoH runs smooth as silk once again.

quote from that thread just a few days ago. uninstall sp2, thats whats fu(king u up.
