Poor Marine Looses His Finger and more

When Marine Lance Cpl. David Battle learned he'd either have to sacrifice his ring finger or the wedding band he wore, he told doctors at a field hospital in Iraq to cut off the finger.

...With his approval, doctors severed his finger, but somehow in the chaos that followed, they lost his ring.

Poor bastard, makes a sacrifice for his vows and someone steals his ring. I guess it the thought that counts though...

I consider that to be a very dumb decision on the marines behalf. No vow is worth enough to make me sever off a body part.

I can [somewhat] appreciate the romanticism of such behavior, but such considerations are best left to those waxing poetic, imo.

What is the point of cutting off a finger to save a ring only to lose the ring 5 minutes later?

Shouldn't be wearing jewelry in combat anyway.

You're an idiot. These men are trained to charge into enemy fire for better or for worse. He is not an idiot. he is exactly what he is trained to bee. The marines are the ones who gain the most ground. unfortunately, that is the way it is.

Tell me that you'd be any more intellectual after being treated like a dog for 10 years?

They are arrogrant bastards, and damn fine ones too. He was thinking with his heart, which is all he has left since thinking with his mind is not allowed.

To criticize a marine for being a marine is true idiocy.

Criticizing someone for going into the marines in the first place is fairgame.

I was a Marine so I don't hesitate for a moment to call this guy an idiot.

What interests me the most though is what kind of doctor would allow a patient to make that kind of decision? None that I know of. I have to think that there is more to this story. Perhaps the chances of saving the finger were almost nil anyway.

What a fvcking idiot.

I didnt want to put it in such harsh words - but yup - a truly fvcking idiot.

I agree. He's an idiot for putting a little peice of gold above his own body. The doctors are idiots for doing what he said, and even his wife is going to think he's an idiot for disfiguring himself.
