It's a back to school special I guess. You pay CRV + Tax. Decent selection of Cola, Diet, Dr Pepperish, Orangia, and Grapity. It beats a yearly pass to Costco for their generic.

When I saw a Fairfax County Water Authority (Northern VA) guy buy TWO 1.5 liter bottles of water for his crew at a 7-11, the first thing *I* did was invest in a pUr filter.

Environmental PROTECTION my *** - more like the Environmental *Poisoning* Agency.

Actually if you have any 99 cent or $1 stores in your area, they often carry the Shasta soda brand... which I like to call "the third world's soda". So that would be $1 for either the 6-pack or the 3-liters (yeah 3 liters NOT 2, Shasta knows how unvaluable their sugar water really is). Funny thing is Shasta soda used to compete head on with the major soda makers back in the 80's. But since have fallen out of favor in the USA. As for the taste... well it's okay. I mainly buy it because in addition to normal Cola and Lemon-Lime flavor, you can find odd flavors like Pineapple, Cherry, and Salmon. ;)

The new Albertsons ad (Fri-Thu instead of the normal Wed-Tue) has 6 12 packs of Albertsons generic soda for $10... same price as savon is advertising.

I might try it... what's the least offensive flavor?

To me, the Albersons soda taste like the regular sodas except the added more water. ;) Their "Dr. Pepper" knock off tastes to most alike. I forgot what the called it... "Dr. Spice", "Mr. Pepper", "Pepper, Ph.D."?

Dr. A+? it's pretty good

Pic-n-Save / MacFrugals usually has the 3 liter Shastas for $0.89. I like the Tiki Punch the best. It's like Hawaiian Punch but not quite so damn sweet, and a little more carbonation.

And to the OP, I'm pretty sure only people in California have to pay the CRV

Dudes, all soda is just syrup and carbonated water. The only differences between the various brands are about 5% of the ingredients in the syrup (since it's 95% sugar) and how much they spend on advertising!

The REALLY, Really poor man's soda here.

And it's GPL'd too!

:)

The major difference between "national brand" and generic sodas is the syrup percentage. National brand ones contain about 5.5 to 5.7% syrup, off brands use stronger flavorings so they can get away with a syrup content of about 2.5 to 3%. Which is why the flavor of the big boys seems to last longer, the higher syrup content lingers longer on the tongue before dissolving.

Since the only other ingredients in soda are water and CO2, a lower syrup content = cheaper, or put another way, half the syrup content = twice as much soda from any given amount of syrup.

This information was given to me from a soda company rep from the company that owns shasta, when they were trying to launch a new national brand thru Sam's Club in the early 90's (anyone remember "Continental Cola"? ) They were the company making it for Sams at that time, and though the brand flopped, you can still find Shasta there today.

Funny, my girlfriend says the same thing each time buy Dr. Pepper or reasonable facsmile. Hey, that's why I like it, because it takes like cough medicine. Why is that so bad. ;)

A guy who's a bit smarter than the average bear once said that "God is in the details." :)

From time to time, Fry's (the electronics store, not the grocery store with the same name) blows out Coke 6-packs for 99 cents each. By the time I start running out of Diet Coke at work, they usually have several more pallets on the floor.

Well, nothing can replace real Mt. Dew for me, but I've taken a partial liking to Wal-Mart's "Dr. Thunder". It doesn't taste exactly like Dr. Pepper, but that's actually a good thing to me. I tend to have to .. use the restroom, after drinking too many 2-liters of real Dr. Pepper. I've been told that one of the "secret ingredients" is prune juice, which, based on my reaction to drinking lots of it, I tend to agree, actually. I don't have that issue with Dr. Thunder, although it's a bit too heavy on the carmel coloring, and the carbonation. Anyhow, the reason that I like it is - the taste is acceptable, and it's caffinated (!), and it costs half as much as the regular price for a 2-liter of Mt. Dew. (two for a 1$)

Barq's root-beer is good too (caffine!), but I can't drink more than two 2-liters of that stuff in a row. It's very.. oily, whatever they put in it. Possibly nutmeg or clove oil, I'm not sure.

Another "cheapy" soda that I've taken a liking to, is Price Chopper's "Black Cherry" soda. It's actually naturally, not artificially flavored, and it goes down pretty smooth. Don't think it's caffinated though. It too can be found on sale for $0.50 at times.

I go through about three 2-liters of beverages a day, so it helps to stretch the soda budget a little. I refuse to pay the "normal" highway-robbery price for Pepsi products, at $1.59 for a 2-liter.

PS. Stay far, far away from Stop 'N Shop's house-brand replacement for Mt. Dew. Tastes like artificially-flavored bannanas or something to me. Blech. I also don't recommend any of the alternative "cheapy" house-brand sodas at Wal-Mart or Price Chopper other than the ones that I've mentioned, although P.C.'s generic "Cola" isn't too bad, at $1.00 for a 3-liter, but I generally don't drink just regular "cola" drinks. (I likewise avoid Pepsi and Coke.)
