Poor male Angler Fish.

I did not know they did that.

My god, that's a terrifyingly hilarious twist to the horror called life.

Some females just eat the male after mating.
This bitch doesn't even do anything. The males just rush for her, latch on, no actual mating involved, and fuse into her skin.
She decides when she wants to make with the babies. The males, long gone, grant her asexual capabilities.

That, is just so damn wrong.

Yup they're pretty weird. But down there life is scarce, if they did it the old fashioned way the males and females might not be able to find each other.

Hi.

Yep, the female anglerfish is by far one of the ugliest fish in the seas.
Actually, most of the deep-sea fish are terrifyingly horrendous.

During my original post, I just had to go to wiki to read up on the angler fish.

And as ADDAvenger stated, yep, it's basically just the only chance to mate.
Females are kind of constrained to the whole "when the egg is ready", and many males and females could probably never have a chance to get with the baby making if they could only do so at that specific time - the angler fish population is extremely spread out, they rarely see each other.

The oceans are by far the most awe-inspiring place to see the way evolution allowed life to find a way. Both the processes, and the ends. Between the types of lifeforms, and the way they go about the life, it's just bizarre and fascinating.

I wonder if that's why staring out at the endless expanse from a beach has always been my little form of zen. I am always just awe-struck staring out at the sea, especially at night.
Sadly, I am completely land-lacked so doing that means I am on vacation, so that may be part of the reason. The ocean is something I don't see often, so when I do, it is just completely mesmerizing and captivates my mind.

The ocean is one of those things I like to read about on Wikipedia, but that's about it. Granted, I've never been on an ocean-going boat, but I don't care for beaches. You ever see a horseshoe crab? You know those things live on the beaches we like to go to, right? Now imagine stepping on one of those 😱. Someone I once worked with said he once found one and thought "hey I wonder what this big rock thing is, I'll dig it up." He dug it out and it stuck its spike-tail straight at him; he just about got stabbed Steve Irwin style. He said he didn't dig up any more crap on the beach that day, but I'm too much of a pussy to do that sort of thing barehanded even if I'd never heard of horseshoe crabs, jellyfish, or regular crabs.

I'd love to find a horseshoe crab! Natures living fossils.

You go right ahead, I'll be sitting on a towel under an umbrella drinking iced lemonade with my giant vagina.

The deep sea depths are that seedy lesbian biker bar you do NOT want to wander into! D:

Yeah I thought about that after I posted it, but double entendres amuse me too much for me to fix it 😛

Aw why not?
You already know your not getting any, but there could be some good sights!

Might get killed when you say or do the wrong thing, but that's half the fun!
😀

As far as horseshoe crabs?
Never seen one outside of an aquarium. I don't know what beaches there are more likely to be found at, but I've never found myself threatened in the water.

Myrtle Beach, I have seen little crabs that scurry at the sight of a shadow. In the water, people pulled out due to possible shark sighting - or very very worried lifeguards when huge schools of tasty fish are spotted. Also the occasional dolphin porpoising here and there.

Saw sharks and stingrays from over the water's surface while para-sailing the one year.

What scares me the most about the water?
Things that sting. Jellyfish and the sort. I HATE those fuckers. Bitey things? Meh, I'd be terrified as shit if I saw a shark start heading straight at me, but unless I see one I'm not even thinking of them.
I'm thinking of the little small things that won't kill you but make you miserable.

A shark bite is a hell of a story to tell... if you live. Maybe a limb or three missing. Still a story. 🙂
Jellyfish?
They're like wasps and hornets. Fucking pointless assholes of the animal kingdom that do nothing but fuck shit up.
At least stingrays are beautiful and cool. But they too fuck shit up. 🙁
I don't fear them as much because they aren't nearly as often near anywhere where lots of humans are splashing.

Anyhow, the water isn't our territory. To be a good ocean-adventuring human one really needs to see that the ocean commands a great deal of respect. Lethal in so many ways. And yet bountiful in things we can barely imagine. It's a surreal beauty unlike anything I can think of on our planet.

Other things I've seen on the beach:
big birds, and lizards. Lizards were in the Caribbean islands, big birds, well... everywhere.
A horseshoe crab would be awesome to see. Fairly confident I wouldn't go and touch the bastard. But it'd be cool to see. I love seeing the various pinchy things on the sands. Rare to actually see them just do their thing, unless their thing is scurry as the sight of you.
Bastards want to live too, and something that completely towers over them scares them more than they scare us. 🙂

I hear you there. I too am afraid of small things stinging me in the watter but am otherwise unafraid of other things. For some reason ever since watching a nature show that described cone snails I've always been a little wary of walking into the sandy surf in tropical areas:

Those fuckers aren't nice. Most don't hurt you much but a few can kill!

Eh, still better than some of the stuff human males have to go through just to get some from the female of the species.

Umm no, no it's not. A woman may figuratively "have you by the balls" but becoming JUST a pair of balls that the woman owns. Umm. no thanks. D:
