This happened before too to a diabetes guy.

I think it animal instinct to remove the 'dead' parts....just like an animal will kill the crippled in it's 'herd' or pack since that animal will eventually starve to death and die slowly.

People don't understand themselves let alone the animals they bring into their homes and are in shock when a serious injury occurs (usually with the large beaked birds).
