poor file system benchmark. help!

first off, specs:
2 x 60GB 7200 maxtor hdd (raid 0)
soyo dragon plus
athlon 1700+
aiw radeon 8500dv
audigy
antec 1040
alpha 8045
512mb 2100-ddr
Windows XP-Pro
logitech z560

second, problem:
eep. did a file system benchmark with sandra and got a score of 3127. that's right 3127. I was expecting to get about ~37000.

here's the specifics of the test:

Performace Tips:
Tip T5202 = Use cache on to measure Windows performance.
Warning W5206 = Low Disk Index. Check DMA bus-mastering is enabled.


any ideas on how to fix my problem?
 
ok. i updated the via 4 in 1 driver and my score changed to 14819. Which is still rather poor.
The Benchmark breakdown has changed as follows:

Sequential Read = 20 MB/s
Random Read = 4 MB/s
Buffered Write = 56 MB/s
Sequential Write = 25 MB/s
Random Write = 8 MB/s

i just ran that benchmark before i read your post, what a conicidence! anyway:
i have a Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM UATA 100 drive and i got a score of 9956! I should have gotten a score of well over 24000. I dunno but i wouldnt pay much attention to this benchmark.
 
I just ran the Sandra drive bench, and came up with:

Drive Index: 24588

Buffered Read: 38 MB/s
Sequential Read: 36 MB/s
Random Read: 6 MB/s

Buffered Write: 38 MB/s
Sequential Write: 34 MB/s
Random Write: 8 MB/s

Average Access Time: 9 ms

This is on the KG7-R with a 7200 RPM Maxtor DM+60 40 GB drive being benched in XP Pro. I am running the drive from the HP 370A controller.

EDIT: No RAID, just the ATA100 370A controller.

The reference score for a 7200 RPM 30GB ATA100 drive is 24000, so 588 over that is not bad...

If you haven't already, check out the PCI Latency patch mentioned in the tecchannel article. On my system (very similar to yours - dragon plus, XP 1700, dual IBM's), my Sandra drive index went from 32000 to 44000 (!) after applying the latency patch.
 
VIA-chipset based mainboards suffer from low IDE performance. All you can do is install the latest 4-in-1's, and apply the latency patch.
