If you cant access the modem web page without resetting it, you most likely have a bad modem or power supply. If you've had the modem for 1 year or less its still under warranty and you should be able to get it replaced for free.

You know, on this one I am going to have to agree with you. This really does sound like a modem problem.

I also agree .. time for a new modem / router .... the op never did mention
the fact about trouble with accessing the modem config or status page.
If he had, we might have suggested a bad modem long ago.

If you read my post, I said the modem was already replaced, and I did say you can't access the modem page when the connection goes down.

The problem is when it does this you MUST reset the modem in order to log into see these pages, thus clearing the present problem.

You're right ... you did say that .. missed it. However, that doesn't mean you didn't get
another bad dsl modem / router ... If you can't get your pc to talk to the config screen without
rebooting or powering off the router, it has a problem. The problem would not be with the
computer, if it was the computer would need to be rebooted

On further thought, I would suggest you Replace the AC Duplex Outlet where the
DSL Modem / Router is connected ... it may be intermittently supplying power to the
ac adapter for the modem / router

Still the same old problems with Att/SBC as of late. For those of you who are having problems, I'll say this...

IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT*

*That is if you've been having reliable service for the last 2+ years until recently.

For some reason or another, especially in Southern California, the dsl as of lately has been terrible. Just really, really bad. I don't know what the problem is other than there seems to be something big going on that is affecting service.

Some people say it's the move to naked DSL soon and thus the wiring is going all screwy. Others say it has to do with some really big problem as of late May with some type of center that handles a lot of traffic of DSL users in the area.

All I know is that it's been a real crapshoot as of late with Att/SBC. Like many others, I want my old reliable service back pre-May. It's been one big headache ever since.

It is plugged into the same power strip that other devices are plugged into.
I suppose I can plug into the other one...this has to be one finicky modem if so.

Unfortunately, my cash to pay off my cable bill isn't coming til July probably, so I am probably stuck with DSL payments for a year now with who knows how long bearing with this type of connection.

DSL modems can act funny when plugged into a power strip. It doesnt matter if all your other devices are working fine. Try to plug your modem directly into a power outlet and see how things perform. .... Also, when your modem was replaced... did they just send you a new modem? Or did they also send you a new power supply? Cuz you could have a bad power supply and usually they dont replace both.

If you message me the userid you registered your account with, I know someone that can run a test on your line. Up to you.

sorry that brings up a red flag with my being in a security class :)
That is just one step closer to my account.
I have already had SBC run line tests from the remote tech desk and coming to my house.

Yeah, its just an email address, but its cool if you need to keep that secure.

Your original post was on 5/15 and its now 6/22. Obviously the people you dealt with at SBC arent doing a good job to get you fixed.

You might wanna start trying a couple of other things on your own. Like stop using the 4100 and try a different modem/router like a 2wire. Maybe you have a friend or someone that could let you borrow one. I think you can even buy them at Bestbuy and return them if you dont like them. It would help you isolate for sure whether or not its a modem problem.

Good luck.

woah guys, thats funny, i always have the same problem! (i live in montreal canada if it helps)

a little story, i have been with 5 dsl companys (local in montreal) i kept switching companies, telling them why i am switching is because i keep losing connection to the internet, etc.

so finally i realized that its not the company it seems, either my modem, or something else.

now it does it on and off, but its the worse whil i am playing a game.

anyway, just wanted to say its not only you guys who have this problem, lol.

SBC/Yahoo has been very dependable for me, I'm in Ohio, btw.

Is your computer hooked directly to the modem, or do you have a router ? If you are using a router, does it have a different ip address than the modem, or are they the same ? The modem is usually 192.168.0.1, I believe, that's the default ip address for some routers too.

No router.

Like I said in earlier reply, I went for days with no problems making me think that my changing hardware and / or wiring the way I did fixed it.

Then boom...it started up again. Just the other day it was terrible.

I was in-game, it freezes up, I reset the modem via logging in again, get back in-game, within 2 minutes it does it again.

I don't notice it much any other times since most of my heavy online use is in the game.

Occasional web use and downloads I haven't noticed.

One time I did have a download stopped when I looked coming home, but I can't remember if I had the game running as well (sometimes don't log out of the game but AFK).

see if you can borrow one from someone you know

i dunno how tight money is... but I got a Westell 6100 off ebay pretty cheap that syncs up better than any modem/router I've ever used from SBC/ATT

The issues youre having really sound like a problem with the modem/power supply.

I dont think you mentioned if ATT has replaced your power supply. Normally they just replace the modem when people have a problem. If they havent replaced the power supply for your modem, get it replaced... it should be free since you should be under warranty.

I'm having the same problem with SBC DSL, I'm in Reno and have had rock solid service for 3 years, now my connection drops at least once a day, but typically 4-6 times a day. I have tried 2 different modems, and 2 routers with no difference at all. This has occured only during the past month. I haven't called tech support because I really don't want to spend 3 hours on the phone for nothing....

2sleepy, your service will probably stay bad unless you call

call them up and ask them to run a test on your line
if they take more than 30 minutes to help you, ask for a higher level of support
