Ryanair may charge for toilet use on planes

LONDON (Reuters) ? Irish carrier Ryanair, Europe's largest budget airline, might start charging passengers for using the toilet while flying, chief executive Michael O'Leary said on Friday.

"One thing we have looked at in the past and are looking at again is the possibility of maybe putting a coin slot on the toilet door so that people might actually have to spend a pound to spend a penny in future," he told BBC television.

He said this would not inconvenience passengers travelling without cash. "I don't think there is anybody in history that has got on board a Ryanair aircraft with less than a pound."

O'Leary has a reputation as a cost cutter, expanding Ryanair by offering low headline fares and charging extra for items such as additional luggage.

Last week, Ryanair announced it was to shut all check-in desks at airports and have passengers check in online instead.

"We're all about finding ways of raising discretionary revenue so we can keep lowering the cost of air travel," he said.

One of the signs of the Apocalypse?

does it really cost alot to have a head onboard? i can't see how it would be much different than an RV. just pump the stuff out at the end of the day.

Flying Ryan Air is insane. The seats are ridiculously close together to pack more people onto the plane. There's always a mass stampede to the plane across the tarmac (open seating). It's funny if you're not part of the stampede. Their luggage weight restrictions are legendary (b/c of all the bodies they get on board), though I think now maybe they explicitly charge by the kg? Their pricing is funny too, or used to be. One direction of a two way flight is usually crazy cheap, like 1 euro. I met a guy who lived in the UK but did business in Spain. He would buy a return flight for every week of the year for like a euro each and then only buy flights out when he needed them.

Regarding a coin slot... which currency? GBP? EUR? Will they charge by weight of, umm, excretion or time on the throne?

They'll quickly find out that the passengers who are flying a no-frills, uncomfortable airline because they are cheap, are the same people who will just go in their pants instead of paying a pound to use the bathroom.

A couple weeks of having to steam-clean seat cushions, and clean up after nauseated passengers who barfed on the plane, will quickly put an end to this policy.

not a horrible idea...I want to say that most restaurants charged 1 euro to use the bathroom...unless they were really nice.

And we have people in America who wish we were more like Europe. I don't get it.

I'm more afraid that in America people would be shitting in the aisle of the Soutwest Airline planes.

Personally I don't want to have to pay for everything....but if we have to, we have too... maybe they will lower the cost of the tickets further

so if we don't use the toilet on the plane, it'll save us money!

most of the flights are less than 2 hours. hold it you sissies.

srsly. The tickets cost next to nothing and the flights are very short. I took tons of lowcost flights in Europe last year & never used the bathroom once.

Eat coins, shit in the aisle, pick coins from shit use to gain access to the bathroom to wipe ass and wash hands.

You used the coin either way, so just skip the shitting in the aisle step and go in the toilet.
