Pondering the structure of a cardboard file box...

So, I've been putting together a bunch of those cardboard file boxes - the ones made out of corrugated cardboard that don't need any tape. I have a habit of putting a ring of packing tape around the top of it, which I've convinced myself makes it stronger.

Am I right? I could see if you were using it for the intended purpose (i'm not), then having the ring of tape might actually be useful because it would add some strength for the cardboard against the hanging files. Perhaps also, since it goes just above (actually slightly into) the handle holes, maybe it would help keep the handles from tearing through when you're carrying it (the lid seems to help with that too).

Or, could some tape elsewhere on the box actually make it stronger?

Hmmm.

Oh? You are not using these boxes for their intended purpose? Please, morkus64, tell me what you are using them for. I must know.
