You can cherry pick Nvidia wins to :)

That is exactly my point - you can cherry pick.

Although I really wish to know how a game like LP2 keeps getting so much benchmark interest - not only it didn't have great reviews, it isn't a sequel to a game with great reviews either.

I don't understand what you guys are arguing about, care to let me in?
Is it related to the OP? I'm lost, sorry.

So far, I understand the OP's upgrade was not what he expected it to be because his vantage score was not as high as it he wanted.
It seems he has overclocked the 5830 and recieved preety good vantage score.
Mabe we should suggest he overclock his gtx460 HAWK and give us his scores to compare with.
I also would suggest he play some games with his new card to get a better feel for his upgrade.

If he is still not satisfied, return it and go for something a tier or 2 faster and more expensive.

If it were me ,I would have just went with one of those gtx570's on special for under 300$.

Mabe this factory overclocked MSI version for 295$AR?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-568-_-Product

Or a gtx560 SOC 1000 core version for $270.

I'm sure there is a couple of "HIS" 6950's on NEWegg for about $250 also.

Granted if it really is 15-20%, that's a lot. At least to me. And the GTX 460 has a lot of headroom for overclocking.
its 15% according to techpowerup. he already has the 5830 overclocked by 13% too. so thats basically a wash for a stock gtx460 to his oced 5830. the gtx460 can be easily oced by 25% so at the end of the day its around 25% improvement oced 5830 to oced gtx 460 card. 25% is not much improvement at all for buying a new card and ocing the heck out of it. and its quite odd that you would even consider 15-20% decent. so you would really buy a new card to go from 30fps to 35fps?

No, it is related to the following.
Yea , Dirt 2 would be a good example. That game was released and packaged with AMD cards and is now somehow faster on Nvidia cards. :hmm:

I'm lost, sorry.

I'm lost as well, since I don't understand what is the OP objective.

Is a GTX460 a decent upgrade over a 5830? I would say no, so returning the GTX460 seems to be granted.

But after that we get no resolution, no games being played, if the objective is only benching 3dmark.

He could even try to crossfire with another 5830 - a lot cheaper and a decent boost and it is something new to play with.

But without resolution there isn't much point trying to recommend a card.

Got to be honest on that. I would have not even post I did it. Quiet return and cased closed.

it's dumb to try to upgrade when you don't have enough/ don't want to spend $ to actually buy the upgrade. then you end up with two of same things.

what the heck are you rolling your eyes about? you should NOT have bought the card if you were expecting a noticeable increase in performance. maybe next time you should ask mommy to show you reviews first so you wont waste your money. :p

I didn't start this thread for snide remarks like these. I simply asked if there was a better card for what I paid for the 460...not if I was stupid/dumb/whatever for buying what I did.
I bought the 5830 because I needed a vid card in a hurry & it was available for cheap. I got the 460 because of other reviews besides the link "Toyota" posted showing that overall the 1GB 460 was a better card than the 5830. I also purchased it because of its' smaller size (fits into my V1000 better) & because it runs a little more quiet (i.e. meaning I won't have to spend upwards of $50 for an aftermarket cooler).

I think you took all of the "the 5830 is a turd" and the "the 460 is so ZOMG awesome" posts too literally. The problem with the 5830 is it was overpriced and it resided in the same neighborhood as possibly the two best cards of the generation bang/$, the 460 and 5850. This made it look worse than what it really was.

These considerations are quite different from those you expressed in the OP.

Reading your OP it seemed that you simply wanted an increase in performance and were a bit disappointed that the performance increase wasn't that much.

I hear you bro, but score doesn't mean anything. Granted the 2 cards are way too close to be said as an upgrade.

IMO if it isn't 50% faster, then it isn't an upgrade. If your 5830 still serves its purpose, then keep it and return the 460. If it doesn't fit in a closed case, then keep the 460. To some posters, 1 FPS means OMG X VENDOR SUCKS AND Y IS FAR BETTER!!! Simply filter those that doesn't relate to your question, like this one.
