Pondering Bike Rack -- 1 1/4" or 2" receiver

So I have a car with a 1 1/4" receiver (came with it). Have old bike rack (4 bikes) that fits into a 2" receiver. I want to carry 4 bikes.

The cheaper way to do this is get a bike rack that fits a 1 1/4" receiver but I'm curious how stable it would be. Pulling off the old receiver from my car and putting on a 2" would be about 2x the cost of a bike rack.

Anyone know where to find information on this -- or do any of you know about this?

they make adaptors from 1 1/4" -> 2"
that would be your cheapest option
it's worth a shot

What kind of car are you using? That typically will rule out the use of an adapter. (lengthens the bike rack by another foot and then going on inclines can cause dragging of the rack and/or bikes) The 1 1/4 inch racks are sturdy enough for a coucle hundred pounds. They are just as snug as a 2 inch hitch so side to side shouldn't be a problem.

The problems I see and hear about with 1 1/4 has more to do with ground clearance of the vehicle than the actual hitch/rack itself.
