Polyphony (Gran Turismo 5) Signs Deal with Top Gear

Polyphony Digital has signed a deal with BBC Worldwide to let you watch Top Gear on your PS3.

You will be able to enjoy up to 40 episodes of the motoring show using the new Gran Turismo TV channel, which will launch on the PlayStation Network sometime next year and feature all the goings-on from the world of cars.

The BBC has also given the go-ahead for the famous test-track from the show to be replicated in Gran Turismo 5, so you can pop on some slightly bizarre music and thrash all sorts of expensive creations around the track just like the enigmatic Stig. (I will so beat his times!!)

"We're sure that players will be as thrilled as we are when they get the chance to put their own driving skills to the test on the Top Gear Test Track in GT5, as well as enjoying classic episodes of Top Gear via GT TV," said Kazunori Yamauchi, end boss at developer Polyphony Digital.

Unfortunately Gran Turismo 5 still looks to be a long way off in Europe, with only a tentative date of July 2008 mentioned for Japan so far.

But those of you eagerly awaiting it will be pleased to know that a demo for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is now on the Japanese PlayStation Store, and all you have to do to get hold of it is create a mock account for the region and begin downloading. But be quick, it will disappear forever on 11th November.

gran tourismo was good in it's day, but i think it suffers from more than a little "maddenitis" i've played them all, and i'll be damned if there's a distinct difference. and don't give me the "next gen console" line, because GT4 on the PS2 looked and played exactly like the others. GTR2 (for PC) is a much better sim game. tons of accurately replicated tracks and cars. the game engine is great, i just wish 10tacle would smooth out some of the net code and gui. maybe the issue is GT is arcade and GTR2 is sim.

anyway, this does sound pretty good. hopefully more quality content will make it's way to console users. i hope they don't charge extra for this.

That is pretty damn cool I have to say. How cool would it be to be able to try and beat the Stig's times in a particular car? I've often wondered just how good a driver he is. They say he's ex-F1, but I've never seen any F-1 drivers take the same cars around the track to compare him to.

Great list. Maybe Simon Cowell should sign up for a spot on a F1 team.

Let's see you try playing GTR2 on a gamepad. LOL Making this game like a PC sim is a sure fire way to make sales flop. Can you imagine GPL on a console?... it would be collecting dust within a week.

i have to disagree. there's a big jump in terms of physics and graphics from GT2 to GT3, and the physics of GT4 is so much different from GT3, i had to adjust from 3rd person to 1st person view.

I definitely have to agree. Although GT2 and GT3 shared physics engines, GT4 had a much different feel because of a different/new engine. Each series was very different from the previous IMO. On the same note, the GT series is not up to par to Forza in the physics department. For example, take a RWD car, turn of TC and don't turn the wheel while accelerating (burnout). The car will continue to go straight forever (track allowing). In Forza, you cannot replicate this, every car pulls to one side from a standing start. In GT4, most cars by default have way too much understeer dialed into them, compared to the same cars in Forza. (Lift off oversteer is actually possible in Forza) In Forza you can have just as much fun driving a 150hp car as you can a 500hp monster, while this is not the case in GT4 IMO. I still prefer GT4 graphics to Forza though.

GT4 cost me $400, GT5 will cost me $500. 🙁

acutally, most real cars, have under steer because its easier for a common driver to handle than over steer. your right about the burnout part though, not many cars are willing to go perfectly straight upon a burnout. but i still prefer gran turismo over forza, forza just has this "i wanna drift" feel to it from the original, i'm going to eventually buy forza 2 as well as a ps3 for gt5 though.

edit: this is yet another reason for me to buy it though, i love top gear with a passion.

yep. I HATED GTR2 when I first got it and was playing with my gamepad. But then I got a logitech wheel and started going thru the tutorials, man that game is fun!

I've only played GT3 and GT4, but there is a distinct difference between the two, even on identical cars on identical tracks. GT4 also added countless new cars, countless new tracks, and significantly improved graphics. the physics were improved, as evidenced by more realistic handling dynamics and increased difficulty, particularly on high-powered cars. What else do you expect? After all, there are only so many things you can do within the realm of a semi-realistic racing sim. maybe Boston Dangler needs rockets and machine guns?

Yea but also bear in mind GT4 is a 3, nearly 4 year old game... On a 6 year old console vs a 2 year old one... When GT5 comes out all that will be different i'm sure of it!

oh yeah, definitely. a whole new physics engine, graphics engine....the works hopefully.
um....one thing i didn't notice about that mariok, i have a 130/140hp car, and i can guarantee you that it takes a lot to break the tires lose on my car. lsd with tires as wide as most vans(205's). add a softer compound to that and you will rarely if ever break the tires lose with just power, you'll have to learn all sorts of little tricks to break them lose. thats one thing i didn't like about forza, you could power over in any car.
